There are two parts to my post.
One, Opus does not currently accept inputs from a 5-button/advanced mouse, e.g. thumbwheel tilt left/right... and maybe the side-buttons. These mice have been around for years. Would be good to have a way to at least map buttons etc in an Opus utility or configuration manager (and then specify to the client user what HID to get/use). More specifically... build-in more standard triggers AND expand RegisterEventHandler(). If that's too much to ask, then make a DLL and enable tapping into the extra mouse functions via OpusScript.

Two... hey look what's coming for PCs/Windows.

June 2, 2009 NYTIMES: Touchscreen future. Now both personal computer manufacturers and software makers hope to do more with touch on larger devices by giving people a 10-fingered go at their screens.

Excerpt:
Quote:
Working together, Microsoft and N-trig have created a type of software interface that lets other companies add touch functions to their programs. Such touch software can handle lots of fingers hitting a screen at once rather than just relying on one or two digits, as most of today’s touch screens do.

N-trig hopes to build more momentum later this year, when three more PC makers are set to join H.P. and Dell as backers of the touch technology. It did not disclose the names of those companies.

The big question is whether companies can create software that makes touch useful rather than a mere curiosity.

Not sure of your reasons for mentioning the touchscreen, but if it had to do with Opus abilities in that area Opus itself has nothing to do with it. I've had an Opus touchscreen simulation program in use at my company for over 2 years. Touchscreen drivers simply emulate mouse functions. Opus doesn't know the difference between a touch screen and mouse and it works beautifully. I am using generic touch screen drivers, free downloadable, that work with a variety of screens. You can get overlays for any monitor as low as 180USD or so from several sources.

No need to wait...they work with any Windoze version.

I've not used W7 yet, but I think it has ts drivers built in.

mulitouch.

It's just something that's coming. Not sure how practical or valuable it will be, but the domain of Opus being multimedia... it ought to be the type of application/toolkit that could make use of new directions in UI. (same rationale applies to another post about supporting two mice AND two active cursors).

http://www.thinkpads.com/2009/09/17/n-t ... thinkpads/ a demo of sorts (not very impressive IMO). But what would Opus do with that rotate gesture?

[Edit: added another link/demo]

I think this is not a standard implementation of 'multitouch' ???, but certainly shows off the potential and future a little better.
