Maybe I missed it, but is there a way to add a Protect from Import for the swf file? I realize that the published file doesn't import very well into Flash and that no protection method is guaranteed, but it would help prevent access to the media.

Hi Roxie, if you are tolking about a "video" embedded on a swf you can always convert it to a flv which will guarantee that the source is never imported only the swf which serves as a shell to project the video.
There are a few programs in the market converting videos to flv format.

While Flash looks like the ideal medium to present your publications to the world, there are a few issues you have to consider.
Flash is very good when you are presenting strongly branded information.
Less branded presentations -- like educational pubs useful to a wide audience -- I present through a login system, unless I want to give them away.

I made the mistake of building some quite complex Flash educational pubs a couple of years ago.
They were stolen, rebranded, all text changed to various Asian dialects, general appearance (colors, fonts, etc) were changed.
Almost unrecognisable except they didn't bother to change the variable names -- then they ended up on 30+ .edu sites.

"Protect from import" might keep the occasional person from looking inside your swf's, but amongst Flash developers it is considered a joke.

Swf decompilers are available that will open any SWF's, protected or not.
All resources can be extracted and some decompilers can even rebuild the source files.
Otherwise removing the protection can be done with a Hex editor.

The swf format is unprotectable because the file specifications are freely available.

I realize that, Paul. Nonetheless,I would like to make a modest effort, more so with licensed media from a third party I feel somewhat obligated to protect.

Just want to lock the door, even if someone can break through the window.

Here you find a tool that can encrypt your swf-files.

Unfortunately Paul is right when he says that decompiling flash movies is quite simple.

Try out the amayeta tool, in my case it could at least make the AS Code within the swf file unaccessable for the most common decompilers.
