I've wondered whether it might be nice to have MNG support. I've sort of made my own before now by using a series of PNG files in a slideshow though.

Opus does support MNG files.

Could you point me in the direction of a good mng maker?

You might want to look at the Applications page on the official MNG site.

Note that Jasc/Corel Animation Shop produces invalid MNGs that do not meet the official spec. There is a utility (written by me!) available from that page to convert AS MNG files into standard compliant versions.
