Flashpiper is very, very cool. I wasn't too excited when I got the announcement as we really hadn't considered mobile apps as useful in our company operations. However, after loading one of our simulations running on my Android phone I got to thinking and realized there is a LOT of potential here.

Thanks and congrats to DW on this offering. I hope many take advantage of the possibilities.

Dave

Thanks Dave for posting this topic. Otherwise I might have missed the significance of DW's new little product.

I immediately looked-in on the Opus Help files... I wanted to refresh myself on the capabilities of Opus Flex. Particularly, what actions and scripting would support persistence of data. I'll summarize what I think is available, and leave it to Mack and others to correct, clarify, or fill-in the gaps.

Opus Flex
1. No traditional write to file, and no traditional database access
2. Standard Actions >>> Post Web Data [ it is under the Launch grouping ]
--- this action allows sending data to a website, and receiving data from a website [ use cgi on the website ]
3. OpusScript commands.
Here is where I need some help. In the help file, InternetPostData() and InternetGetData() are not listed as supported in Flex. Is that an oversight? Can they be used with Flex, and if so... does it also work on the Android?
4. Flash Cookies.
I have been blocking flash cookies on my PC. But I wanted to explore Opus' capability here. Answer is: at least on a Windows PC, Opus Flex does write and read persistent cookies. Will this also work on Androids?

On my Vista PC, these special cookies are written to a .sol file in this path: [ bold indicates changeable values ]
//we do not need to know this path or use this in scripting... it is just FYI
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\UNIQUE_FOLDER_NAME

Thanks to Dave Emberton for providing simple example scripts for Flash Cookies. Thanks to Stephen for asking that some time ago.
Dave also provided a downloadable .imp file that demonstrates this capability.
BTW, this came under the term, or topic, of Flash 'sharedobject'

find it here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3996&hilit=sharedobject

It will be good to know which of these methods will work well via Flashpiper and Android devices.

Cheers,
Larry

Does anyone know if DW's new Flashpiper (and all of Opus Flex pub publishing) provides anything similar to Flex 4.5 PersistenceManager? This is apparently a feature of Flex Builder toolset, but only at its ver 4.5 and up. PersistenceManager is a streamlined way of writing the mobile app's view or state to memory -- in the event a User takes a phone call and the mobile app closes.

Lars, while I certainly can't speak for DW it is my belief they will address these issues as the implications for this technology are enormous in my profession as well as in education.

I used the write values to registry function for some of our early work getting Opus to function from local instead of streaming launch, but I cannot recall and haven't looked today to see if this works in Flex.

In any event, as I said above, I believe data persistance and transfer to LMS systems, CMMS systems, and the like are critical and will follow.

Possibly......seems to me flashpiper has some way to go before being a practical Android app. No pinch to zoom, flash exported from Opus occupies only a small area of the screen whereas it might occupy the whole of the PC Screen. Currently no options in the App. An encouraging start but in need of a lot more development.
