anyone able to help with this?

has anyone heard of broadcast protection ? i.e. you can view a DVD on your laptop monitor but cannot send it to a data projector. Someone says they have experienced this. Perhaps this only applies to zone protected DVDs?

As funny as this might seem, it is very likely that someone was simply unable to get their projector to work with their laptop. I've seen many competent techs lose their battles between laptop and projector (excluding me 8) ), so I wouldn't be surprised if someone concluded that the DVD must be "broadcast protected."

The fact is, the choice of which display to use - primary, secondary or external - is a function of the display adapter so I would say it is impossible for a regular video DVD to have this type of protection. A PC-based DVD may have some sophisticated software to disable a secondary display but I doubt it would work universally, especially as most laptops' display adapters will boot up with the external adapter initialised if a monitor or projector is plugged in.

...just happen to be travelling by a year 'late'.

I think on my laptop... video sources needed to go into Video-connector, nor RGB of projector. Possibly, that DVD stream is considered as video interface. ?
Stranger things have happened.
