So far I have not gone the path of Windows 7, but maybe... someday around the corner.

For those who are considering upgrades, you may want to check out Paul Thurrott's website. Blog entries for late-October '09 outline different upgrade scenarios... e.g., specific steps to take WinXP 32 to Win7 64.

and some info and clarification on buying Windows 7 upgrade cheaply:

Cheers.

I just spent two days helping my daughter rearrange how she uses her business computers because of Windows 7.
Microsoft dropped Outlook Express from W7, and many home businesses are built around it -- most of them own Outlook as it came with Office, but many people don't like it.
MS weaseled out of this by giving a separate download of Windows live essentials. I assumed (never a good thing to do) that OE was in there somewhere, and I ended up with this piece of simplified cr*p called Mail.

In the end had to use Outlook; total overkill if you want a simple email client.

Paul,

Windows Vista (Home Premium 32) came with "Windows Mail", which MS touts as the successor to Outlook Express. Are you saying that Win7 is absent that application? Or, that "this piece of simplified cr*p called Mail" you mention is the Windows Mail app?

If I didn't have and like Outlook (full), I'd probably look into Mozilla's mail clients (thunder-aviary or scorched-monkey ?).

Hi Larry,
The 'Windows Mail' in Vista is basically the same as 'Outlook Express' in XP. We had no problems with that.
Windows 7 has removed it altogether, and the Windows 7 Essentials download has "Mail" but it's nothing like the 'Windows Mail' in Vista.

cheers
Paul

I use Thunderbird, which is pretty similar to the old Outlook Express. It is a bit strange how MS rebranded OE as Windows Mail for Vista only to remove it altogether for Windows 7.

GO the extra mile get Outlook 2007, read a book like "Take back your life" by Sally McGhee or less expensive get hold of "Professor teaches Outlook 2007" then sit back and relax.

I am amazed that people faf around with these over simple mail programs instead of doing the job properly, with a good understanding of a powerful organiser that includes a mail client.

Once you have a proper system up and running you will wonder why you bothered with OE, Windows Mail etc.

Kind regards and merry Christmas

Martin

Double Ditto that - lovely program.

Would suggest though that you seek out and install the free attachment extractor that removes them all to a folder keeping the PST file small. Also run the compact now every now and then but skip the auto-archive feature.

If you a Vista / W7 user there are various gadgets that help you quickly keep track of appointments, mail, etc.

My point is that Microsoft removed a simple email client that many users found easy and convenient to use.
Not everyone wants or needs to use an organizer...

Hi Mack

Do you have any more info on where the attachment extractor is available?

Regards

Pete
