I thought this was an interesting tool Google has developed.
http://browsersize.googlelabs.com/

I guess it uses accumulated data on display resolutions deployed, and processes a given URL to estimate what size area most users will see or view. Hint: use Ctrl +/- to scale the page.

in a related story: http://browsershots.org/

( separately, I have been puzzled in recent times.... why so many webpages place content in a relatively narrow center column, while at the same time the aspect ratios for popular displays has gone wide (16:10 and 16:9)? Sure, some pages fill up the sides with google ads or tag clouds, etc... but so often I have unused display territory!)
