I am looking into smart phones -- to test mobile apps, mainly what is generated here in html5 (no native apps).

Is it better to get one of the later/latest versions of android, and just use emulators to test older platforms? Or do I have this backward?

I am thinking Anrdoid OS 4.0.0 or maybe later, in a 5-inch form factor. But I have not found definitive info on where HTML5 kicks-in and is supported. Andr 4.2 seems to be a current sweet-spot.

TIA.
Larry

ICS and greater currently has about 70% of the Android market - although JB has the largest chunk of that at about 50%. GB (2.3) has most of the rest.

What works on what can be found here: http://html5test.com/results/mobile.html

But remember that like desktop, it's not the OS that matters but the browser - so a more capable browser could be installed on a different OS and provide access to better HTML5 functionality.

Everything out of Opus works fine on my ICS tablet - so I use it as a base.

Thanks Mack. All good info.

That last piece answers a lot. I wasn't sure how configurable, or how locked-in, these devices might be.
