When you click on an item in the listbox it can be stored in a variable, but is it also possible to automatically store the highlighted item when you use to arrow keys to go up and down?

Yes, it is possible. One way is to add a multi-trigger to the list box for the up/down keys, you will also have to add a trigger for the mouse click down as well...... then add a small script to do whatever you want.
