Hi Denn,

Did you miss the post! You embed the exe with the ADDITIONAL RESOURCES!

Mackavi,
Since I got the feedback from Duncan on this saying that it can't be done, I've all but given up. How would someone use the additional resources? I looked at that approach and couldn't figure out the path where they would be so I could copy them to the user’s computer. It looks as though that would be a start, but the procedure evades me.

Add the exe to the additional resources and give it an alias EG myprog.exe

Using either the Launch or Copy actions, enter the alias, and for copying the destination. Once published the exe is embedded into the install.exe.

Clicking on the button with the action will cause the myprog.exe to either be run or copied to the destination you specify. When copying the myprog.exe is renamed but the could be easily changed back.

I would image that this would solve your final problem.

Thanks Mackavi...

I was out of town all weekend and have not had a chance to try this method, but it sounds do-able. Hopefully I will have time tomorrow afternoon to set down and follow your instructions.

Good luck,

Let me know how you get on. Out of interest, because I currently use advanced installer, will your installer manage to add information to the ADD/REMOVE panel?

Mack,

To answer your question, no, not at this point. I can't put an icon on the desktop either, but it is working great for what I need it for right now. I'm using it to replace a file of the same name, within a folder on the user's hard drive. It's an updated file, but has the same name. This way the icon on the desktop will still work to open the program, but the program will be updated once installed.

Many thanks! Your solution worked great and actually carried the correct name over to the folder it was supposed to, and deleted the old file which it was replacing, which was exactly what I was trying to accomplish. The variable the information is put into from the browse action is “Directory”. So my copy to command was <Directory>/pd-Base.exe. It worked great and I truly appreciate your input. I have never used the script alias command before. I’m still amazed after all the years of using Illuminatus / Opus Pro, to find new things that can be accomplished. The ability to trade information on this site has been a help to all who have been here to some level. Thanks again!

Morning Denn,

Glad to hear that it's working. The easiest way to create a short cut would be to use the attached file. As it's can be run from DOS, simply embed into the publication and launch with the correct parameters. You can even pass the variables of the paths the user has selected.

As for the A/R panel, I'm thinking that this must be registry info and could be created either using Opus directly or again via 3rd party.

Mack

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Good Morning Mack,
The shortcut program you let me download looks like it will take care of the program if I ever figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've tried using the shortcut.exe program, but have not been able to get it to work. I have embedded it into the installation program that I created, and when I run the installation program I can see the dos window pop up (very briefly) so I know that it is being activated, but it never places an icon on the desktop. In Opus, I'm launching Shortcut.exe with the option/parameters below...
/F:%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\pd-Base.lnk /A:C /T:C:\pd-Base\pd-Base.exe /W:C:\pd-Base /R:1 /I:pd-Base.exe,0 /D:pd-Base
BTW: On the /I: (icon) I have tried several variations showing the full path and leaving off the ,0 at the end.

Below is the format of the Shortcut program...
Shortcut.exe /F:filename /A:C|E|Q [/T:target] [/P:parameters] [/W:workingdir] [/R:runstyle] [/I:icon,index] [/H:hotkey] [/D:description]

/F:filename : Specifies the .LNK shortcut file.
/A:action : Defines the action to take (C=Create, E=Edit or Q=Query).
/T:target : Defines the target path and file name the shortcut points to.
/P:parameters : Defines the command-line parameters to pass to the target.
/W:working dir : Defines the working directory the target starts with.
/R:run style : Defines the window state (1=Normal, 3=Max, 7=Min).
/I:icon,index : Defines the icon and optional index (file.exe or file.exe,0).
/H:hotkey : Defines the hotkey, a numeric value of the keyboard shortcut.
/D:description : Defines the description (or comment) for the shortcut.

Any ideas?
