Ladies and Gents of the SCORM compliance community,
Can I suggest that you have a look at http://www.reload.ac.uk which has some free software to package and test SCORM courseware. You will still need some understanding of what to put into the IMS Manifest file and you will probably need to create your production in Flex.
You can get manifest protocols from http://www.cetis.ac.uk/profiles/uklomcore/
I am currently working my way through the tutorial for the SCORM editor software so I am not in a position to help others as yet.
If anyone else has success with this software I would be keen to hear.
Hope this information is helpful.

Hi Andy,

As you could read in this discussion Roger Pomerleau had succes with SCORM. His succes isn't with a flex publication but with an Opus web publication, so you need to install the plugin.

I'm not sure about the changes in the code to use it with flex.
Unfortunately I'm to busy at the moment to do more research yet.

I hope I can spend some time in april.

Sorry should have made it clear before. The new 5.5 update has updated the SCORM script wrapper in Opus so it now passes the current compliance test.

We still hope to produce a practical example and tutorial in due course. But the attempts we have so far made with specialist third parties have been impractical. Not surprisingly those who have mastered SCORM properly (even amongst our own users) are not overly keen to make the the solution generally available in a package as cheap as Opus.

Hi Paul,

maybe my english is not good enough to understand exactly what you want to tell us. What are all these statements that contain words like "we hope ..." Does that mean that you or your programmers are not able to make this feature work??? IMHO it cannot be such a big secret how to create a SCORM compliant pub. In the meantime a lot of other - partly very inexspensive - tools have appeared on the market which can create SCORM compliant output with one single click.

For example have a look at Macromedia Captivate or Articulate Presenter respectively Articulate Quizmaker and a lot of other tools. None of these has any difficulties to create SCORM output. None of these needs any examples to show the user how to do it. The output settings in all these tools are so simple that everbody can create SCORM output even without reading the manual.

So what is the big problem with opus? What is the reason we have to wait for so long for a working solution?

It is obviously to all of us that our customers want and need this SCORM stuff so please let us do it with opus.

If I can clarify:

Opus is capable of producing SCORM compliant materials. As it stands. Unless someone tells us otherwise, it works. It never needed any additional functionality anyway, but we have dome some of the scripting work for you and provided SCORM templates. We have updated these so that they now pass the SCORM compliance test for the latest version of the test suite.

What some people seem to be saying here is that it isn't easy enough. That is a different matter. We are looking at this and trying to find a way to make it easier in a future version but that means it is competing with all the other things all the other customers want included in the next version.

Hope this clarifies things.

Paul Harris

thanks for your reply.

If I count the views and postings belonging this topic it seems that this thing maybe is a little more wanted than others. In fact - I talk for my customers - this is so urgent because for many customers this is a "must have" feature. Making the creation of SCORM output easier will make opus much better.

I would agree. SCORM is an important topic these days, and almost a de facto requirement when creating any kind of training for the corporate world. Are there companies that don't use LMSes and don't need this? Yes, but the larger ones (i.e. ones with depper pockets), are requiring that SCORM be used. It only makes sense from their point of view. They want something that will run on their LMS with little or no hassle. I would say bump this up to a 1,2, or 3 priority level over other items.

Opus is, and always has been, a great value. I was reminded of that again yesterday when I was considering purchasing an authoring tool for developing WBT. Granted it produces AICC, SCORM, and LRN content with a touch of a button, but it would set me back almost $2000!!

Keep up the great work :D

Well here's my 2 cents on this issue first I must thanks Roger Pomerleau for sending me some info and prototyp on SCORM but what I realised is exactly what Paul said and that is it isn't quite easy or straight forward to implement SCORM so guess what I have to go back to the drawing board and delve deeper into understanding the mechanics of it. The technical information from ADL is quite extensive and is taking me a while to grapple. What would be good is if we got a more extensivley commented script from DW and anyother insight into how to interface with the SCORM javascript wrapper then I am sure the better scripters among us can make it easier on those of us who wnat to concentrate on the media creation side. I would also be interested to learn what test bed SCORM environment people have used when testing their SCORM productions.

Hi Carib,

I'm using moodle to test SCORM compliant applications.
It's a E-learning environment based on php and mysql and it's free (Open source software).
When you install EasyPHP on your computer you can use moodle local on your computer to test everything on a local server.

Here are the links:

Kind regards,

Groeten,

Jos

Hi Andrew,

did you succeed in making an opus publishing to work with the reload software? If yes do you like help us other users with describing how you did it?

Are there other users who finished a SCORM publication and like to publish it for the opus community? Are there any SCORM samples from DW available?

@DW: Will you give us some samples to learn from?

Opus is such a great software but this SCORM thing is actually the only reason why I currently don't start new projects with opus.

Dear All,

No sorry, I'm still struggling with the manifest file. I think the furthest that anyone seems to have got is Roger Pomerleau (see page 2)

I found a very interesting and IMHO useful text about SCORM and how to aggretate SCORM packages.

http://www.ostyn.com/standards/docs/Eye_Of_The_SCORM_draft.pdf

I found out that most customers like to get a complete SCORM aggregation package rather than only a html- and a swf-file. So I hope we will get this feature in Opus 6.

Hi Tarantoga,

Thanks for this text. I think it will help me to build SCORM packages.
I also hope we will get a complete SCORM aggregation package in Opus 6.

Best regards,

I wonder if the pages "Comments Page" and "Objectives Page" which are created when starting a new SCORM compliant publication are needed in any case for a working SCORM publication.

When I look at the scripts and the requirements for communication with a LMS I think that only the "Start Page" and the "Exit Page" are essential for a working publication.

I would appreciate if someone could give some informations about this topic.

Thanks in advance.

Hello DW,

do you have some news about the SCORM topic?

I gave a SCORM test application which I had built with Opus to a customer and he told me, it did not work in their LMS (CLIX).

I am not really shure if I had made a mistake or the if the Opus SCORM output does not work with this special LMS.

So a working example would be very!!! appreciated.

Has someone else created SCORM publications with Opus in the meantime? Do they work in a LMS?

I hope we can get some answeres to these SCORM questions.

Thanks in advance.
