Opus: Opus Pro 9
OS: Win 10/64
When trying to install Opus 6.4 on a fresh Vista-System I get the following error message:

The File 'C:\Windows\system32\Msvcrt.dll' could not be opened. Please check that your disk ist not full and that you have accesses to the destination directory. Zugriff verweigert!

When I then click OK the installation is aborted.

And yes, I have administrator rights, and yes I have set the installation file to start as administrator and yes, I have tried to set in Win XP compatibility mode.

If it would be not SO annoying, I would admire DS for producing error messages again and again on almost every machine I try Opus to run or to install.

Today I have installed about 25 applications on this brandnew machine without one single problem. I try to install Opus: Bingo!

And no, I do not run AVG since I know that this is not possible when using Opus.

Maybe someone can tell me which problems the Opus setup has with Msvcrt.dll.

I would really be glad just to install and use. I promise, I will not complain about Opus any more, but please tell me how to make it work.

T.

T,

I had similar problems last April.... Msvcrt.dll error message.

Before the problem, I had Opus v6 running. Had the Opus App set to run in XP Compat. mode, and run as admin. ( in retrospect, probably unnecessary or unproductive)

Then I went to install v6.01 I think. I probably did it as an overinstall, should have done full.

Other things, I was using Trend Micro AV. Removed that and switched to ESET. I did some other app installs/uninstalls.

I cannot say it was DW/Opus fault. There were a lot of 'gotchas' around Vista and my laptop. Real conflicts between the Vista updates and one or more Drivers.(Win updates went into infinite loop) Had to build my machine clean, and install drivers in a particular sequence.

That said, if I had to guess the 'root cause', I just couldn't guess.

If you've done multiple attempts at installing OpusPro, probably should go back to a clean restore point (that leaves your other Apps intact), and perhaps manually delete DigitalWorkshop registry keys that other posts recommend. I would not run the installer itself in compatibility mode.

good luck.

Just installed Opus v6.4 on a new computer running Vista SP1; no problems at all.
I do have the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable installed -- maybe that helps.

What were the 25 applications you installed before Opus?

You could look for your \windows\system32\msvcrt.dll file in explorer and right click to get its properties. Under details should be the version number.

Try shutting down everything, including the things that live in your system tray.

I've just tried installing 6.4 on my Vista laptop, with a Guest login (so with no permissions) and AVG running. All that happened is I was prompted to logon as an adminstrator on running the install, but after that Opus was installed and runs fine. I know that doesn't help, but at least proves there's no fundamental problem with Vista, Opus or AVG.

Opus: Opus Pro 9
OS: Win 10/64
... at last I have found the reason for the problems with the Opus installation routine.

Weeks after asking DW for help I stumbled upon this in another forum bei accident:

Quote:
File msvcrt.dll is common runtime module used by many programs. It's always
in use so no installation program can update it directly like it seems your
installation process is trying to do. Propably that installer contains bug
and it cannot handle locked files correctly. Version of msvcrt.dll changes
with service packs, so sp3 has newer version than sp2. That installer
propably tries to replace newer version with older, which isn't very good
idea.

After reading this I renamed my 'msvcrt.dll' to 'msvcrt.old' and started the installation of Opus 6.4.

Now the installation works without any problems and I can use Opus eventually after months the first time.

Although I am still disappointed , because I did not get the slightest help from DW :(

BTW: The renamed msvcrt.old has to be renamed to msvcrt.dll. The new! msvcrt.dll which is installed bei Opus can simply be deleted. It has the build number 6.0.8797.0 which was the current one in october 2001!!!

I hope that at least this information is useful for others with similar problems.

Hi T,

I'm glad you found a solution at last. I have to admit that you must have the worse luck with installing Opus under Vista of any user on this forum but perseverance has prevailed. :-)

I guess that the particular DLL is included with Opus for compatibility reasons with older OS. It's one of the original members of DLL Hell and MS eventually shipped it as standard.

I hope you get to enjoy the software now and thanks for posting the solution.

Mack
