Hi all

I am producing publications on CD ROM using Opus XE. The publications have a 30 days evaluation period after which an unlock code is needed. So far so good and this works fine. However these CD ROM are published on demand so some days I may issue 100 and other days just one. My query is, do I have to reset the publication ID, or re-run the Publication Wizard every time I copy and send out more disks in order to avoid the evaluation period running out before the disks are issued, or is the evaluation period updated on the saved copy on my hard drive?

I'm grateful for any advice.

Best wishes

Chris :?

The evaluation period and unlock key are specific to the machine running the publication; not your PC. You can ship the same publication to any number of users.

Hi

Another query re the unlock facility. Some users of the disks I publish use them on several computers in a single organisation. The computers may not be networked. In addition, the users may want to take the disk home to prepare work on their own computers. Is there any way the unlock code can apply to the CD rather than be specific to one computer?

Also, can the unlock code apply to specific chapters rather than the whole CD (i.e. can users have access to the first poart of the CD and get an unlock code for the rest when they have paid)?

If the answers tho these ponts is no I can get around the problem by using password protection rather than the unlock unlock facility.

Many thanks for your help

Hi Chris,

I'll try to answer for DW here over the weekend... :D

I think the whole purpose of the unlock key facility is for security of your publication. (so it's intention is to run on ONLY the legitimate user's computer.) However in your case, you could generate another key for the other computers the owner legitimately owns. This gives you the opportunity to hopefully confirm your publication is not being illegally used on unauthorised people's computers.

What about using the options on the Publication Properties -> Security Tab -> CD Protection? That should give moderate protection, so the original CD is being used. The unlock key feature does not apply to the CD.

I think you can use the PUBLICATION_EVALUATION variable in your 30 trial version to check the state of the publication. This could determine what Chapters/Pages you want available. Once the unlock key has been used, then the rest of the pub will be unlocked and work. (refer in the Help File about PUBLICATION_EVALUATION for details)

DW will clarify any further questions you have I am sure.

Chris,

If you want the unlock code to be specific to the cd, why not simple use a text input box on the first page. Then use some simple if statements to check if the correct code has been entered. If the correct code is entered you could write an entry to the registry which can be checked for when the publication starts. Dependent on what code is entered you could then be selective about what pages in your publication are viewed.
