Post subject: Strange situation with resources
PostPosted: August 23rd, 2006, 6:21 pm
I'm working on a small pub, currently 10 chapters, 100 pages and 374 resources.

The disk structure for this pub is: F:\Read\ for the IMP and associated files. and and F:\Read\Resource\ for the resources. This looks OK to me. I've used similar structures for years without a problem -- until now. :(

I save my work automatically, and manually.

Everything is fine until I first Save, and then attempt File > Backup Publication... This runs to completion and appears to work as expected until I restart Opus. My pub opens and Opus announces that there are 374 resources missing. I click to open the Resource Manager.

I select Change Data Path, and this is where things get strange. The dialogue box displays:

Remap Resources at this location: F:\Read\
To this location: F:\Read\Resource\

I have not placed any resources in F:\Read\ but when I click OK, the resources are remapped and appear in the pubwhere I originally placed them.

My first thought was a corrupt registry entry, so I uninstalled Opus, cleared the registry and HDD, and reinstalled Opus. No change.

I've not experienced this before, and I've been using 5.5 since shortly after it appeared.

Has anyone expreienced this? Or better still, identified a resolution? Of course the work around is to not use the File > Backup Publication... function and make my own backups, which is what I will do.

Hi Ray,

I was interested in this discovery and you are correct! i.e. once you have used the Backup Publication feature, and you reload the IMP file, it claims the resources are missing, so you have to remap them again.

The solution (if using the backup zip feature) is to initially consolidate all your resources into the same directory as the IMP file. (though this may not be what you want?)

In your current pub, Go the Main Menu >> Publication >> Consolidate... instead of using the default "Resource\" (which will be highlighted) -- enter in only a fullstop and a backslash .\ (this will consolidate all resources into the same directory as the IMP file)

Hope this is of some help. :)

Hi Steve

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I'm pleased that you have removed my concerns of there being hardware or software issues. I know as I get older that my memory becomes less reliable, but I am sure that I have used the technique I described in my original post for years without a problem. I'm almost paranoid about backing up.

Your suggestion does work. This was one of the first techniques I tried, but it proved to be impractical for me, although it should be acceptable in many cases.

My reservations relate to the number of resources. While I currently use only 374 resources, I have built a total resource pool of 851 (and increasing) objects. Even 374 floods the root directory for the pub. I hesitate to see how difficult it would be to manage when 800+ files are involved.

For me, I think a manually zipped backup is the more practical way to go.

Ray --

I have a very simple way of making a protected Backup of my imp file for every project. When I've done alot of OPUS work, and want to make sure I have another, safe copy, from within OPUS, I click the OPEN icon as if I were going to open an OPUS program. I highlight the imp file I'm working with, then I RIGHT mouse click which opens a menu that includes access to my WinZip program. I select WinZip, which opens another menu showing recently used zipped files. WinZip automatically has the name of whatever file you've initially highlighted on the list, so I click it.

WinZip compresses my imp file into a zip file within the sub-directory with my imp file. I therefore have a zipped copy, an AutoSave copy, and a Backup copy of my imp work.

This method doesn't automatically save any of my resources, but I can also add them into my imp zip file if I wanted. Obviously, you need WinZip (www.winzip.com) or something similar for this to work. I usually move finished projects onto another hard drive, and I make DVD data backups of those projects -- just in case.
