Using hypertext I want to go to a specific point in a long piece of text on another page.

I've spent ages searching the forum 'cause I'm sure I've seen this explained before, but had no luck.

Can anyone help me out on this or find what I thought was there in past posts?

Many thanks

John

Hi John

I too, would love to find a solution to this :(

I believed that this might have been how bookmarks worked, but sadly they do not -- or if they do I have never been able to find the solution.

It might be possible to develop a script action that would use a hyperlink to take to to a specific word on a page, but that is way, way outside my scripting skills.

However, I live in hope that a scripting genius might develop something that works, and is simple enough for me to understand it. :)

Hi John,

A simple version of this is quite straightforward. Insert the hyperlink and add an action that stores the line number you want to jump to and then add a goto page. Use and onload trigger to check for the previously stored value and excute a goto line action.

Sentosa, I've got a client who wants part of their publication to inlcude a book (training manual). One of the features they are looking to impliment is the ability to bookmark various locations in a text passage on various pages and then return to these at any time using a pop-up index window. I to have looked at bookmarks, but find while they are great for returning to previously accessed pages, I know the client requires jumping to (or highlighting) a specific element of the page (simular to the # in html) or word / phrase in a textbox.

I have started to develop a working example of this but am interested in how you see this idea working for you.

Mack

Thanks Mack,

Trying to execute your instructions! Need a little more help though.

Got a number of these hyperlinks on different pages so I have set up a publication variable called linenumber with initial value 0

On my trial page I have a hyperlink with the following
Left mouse click
Script linenumber = 70
Go to page "Page 4"

This I hope is correct.

It's on the destination page that I cannot work out how to do what you suggest.

There is a named text box "textjob" and it's line 70 of that text that I want to scroll down to and display at the top of the text box.

Tried onshow and then adding a script that says goto linenumber but of course all I get is errors.

I cannot use the go to line action on page entry as this seems to hard code that line only, and I need to jump to different points dependent upon which hypertext link is hit - hence my use of the variable "linenumber"

John

I'm guessing that the error is caused by using a page not publication variable perhaps. Anyway, I've included a working example. Forgive the story - it's the first thing I found in google.

Thanks Mack,

Works a treat.

It becomes blindingly obvious when you see how it's done. Trouble is - I don't 'see' very well when it comes to both the logic and syntax!

All the best

John

PS Ray, I hope it helps your problem too.
