I am surprised to find that my Laptop Touchpad cannot scroll such things as TextObjects w/Vert Scrollbar, DocView and Browser objects. (of course scroll by dragging on the object scrollbar itself works).

Most Windows applications seem to accept touchpad input for scrolling, for example Firefox browser. Synaptics' drivers typically now allow setting up side areas, "edges", for drag-to-scroll. There is a setting option whether object must be clicked-on/selected, or simply mouse-over. I have tried both.

I missed noticing this as I use an external mouse, and also my old WinXP laptop had a thumbwheel built in.

Can others confirm... touchpad edge scroll does not work? This seems like a gross error/omission. If I'm stuck with this, will need to rethink some useability aspects of pub layouts. TIA.

Works ok on an HP Pavilion dv6000/Vista notebook, and on a Compaq r3003 P4/XP notebook.

Paul, thanks... that gives me some comfort and some sanity.

Puzzling why T-pad would work/scroll with most, or all?, of my other apps and not Opus. ( I was 'worried' about Pubs produced, but think maybe it was also an issue within Opus Editor. )

Anyway, I uninstalled the Synaptics trackpad (via Device Mgr) and opted to remove driver software as well (ck box). A couple reboots later... the trackpad is using MS generic drivers instead of updated Synaptics drivers. Also, it never seems to be a 'conflict' issue between T-pad and external Mouse.

Result:
(in case others run into this)
-- Trackpad is now showing up under Human Intf. Device (and there are 10 entries there!!) T-pad is not under 'Mice...'
-- Bult-in trackpad now works quite well... appropriately edge-scrolling (in some case on MO, others after click/focus -- but it seems natural.)
-- No 'cruise' scrolling
-- No Horizontal scrolling available.
-- No means to access advance settings or features of trackpad.

So, I now have a procrastinated 'to-do' to sort this out better... someday. This is Vista Hm Prem - SP1.

I am starting to think I will need to create a "User-environment testdrive Pub"... something to guide the User through some simple exercises and shown what to expect/what should work. Anyone doing anything like that?

Thx & 'Whew!'
:?

I don't know how the touchpad software works internally; but if it is looking for a standard Windows scrollbar control then it won't work, as Opus uses it's own scrollbars (if it didn't, you wouldn't be able to style them or change their size etc.) It it just sends the scroll messages to the window then it should be OK.

Maybe there is a difference between the drivers that explains the different results. It's out of our hands I'm afraid.
