I am using Times New Roman in my body copy. The apostrophes are coming out sans serif (like Arial). The commas however are proper. I have been using Opus Pro 6 for a long time and it may have been doing all along but my current client is in academia and are very picky.

Any ideas?

FYI I've tried to replicate the problem and can't do so - i.e. the Times Roman apostrophes are serif and not sans serif. Maybe reinstalling Opus will help, but I can't see why.

Try turning smart quotes on in the Tool - Options dialogue.

Thanks again

In V6,

It's Tools - Options Dialogue.

Then General - More - Automatic Text Format.

Don't know about other version.

Pro XE doesn't have the "more" selecion under the general tab. I'll have to keep looking for a workaround or upgrade.

Thanks much tho!

Thanks for all reponses- I did an expereriment. I downloaded eval version of Pro 6 and imported my project with the apostrophe error. The error was still there even after clicking on the "smart quotes" box.

However- when I started a new publication / page and insrted fresh text, the proper apostrophe was displayed. Any ideas?

THX,
Craig

A couple of things;

Toggling smart quotes doesn't update the publication - you'd have to delete the character and then re-type.

Also - how was the character entered in the first place? Have you typed it from the keyboard (@ key of UK). If it is cut and paste or ALT insert it might look like an apostrophe but be a different character - an accent perhaps.

Can you upload a screen shot / IMP?

You are absolutley right. (about re-typing the apostrophe). However it didn't really pertain to the "smart quote" box being clicked on. I just selected the apostrophe in V Pro 6 and retyped the character. And yes the text was originally cut/pasted.

I can't perform the same fix in Pro XE.
I would like to find a resolution to this in Pro XE so I don't have to pay for an upgrade. My business is primarily video production and I don't really do a lot of interactive projects.

Thank you very much for your time on this issue.

You could try inserting the ASCII.

Hold the ALT key down and type 039.

Your last assist would be perfect (if) the character could be rotated 180 degrees. It is kind of an upside down backwards apostrophe

Confronted by Mack's expertise I really shouldn't re-enter this post. It may be worth noting, though, that the version of Opus Pro XE installed on my PC (5.5) DOES have the option to toggle smart quotes. As Mack states: Tools-Options-General-More will find it.

The easy way to find an ASCII code for specific character is to use the symbol manager in MS Word.

Go to Insert Symbol and select the font you require. Then scroll down and find the character you want.

Beneath this is the character code and the 'from' - make sure this is set to ASCII (decimal) and then simply enter the character code as an ALT string into Opus.

Remember to add the leading zero to your character code.

Although the above will work - I'm confused as to what your apostrophe is. ASCII 039 is the control code for the apostrophe and whilst changing type face might alter it's appearance - it's still the same code and character.

Cheers Roger,

But I learnt this the hard way after trying to read lists of spelling words into an opus game to discover that people use all manor of characters for the apostrophe.

Having only ever used a UK keyboard perhaps other layouts actually display characters that resemble what I personally use as an apostrophe.

I'm guessing, much like my scripting, Opus Smart Quotes looks for ASCII 039 when converting.
