Hello everyone,

Each time I start Opus Pro 6, I get the message "cannot load version information"... and the only way to work on my publication is to reinstall Opus Pro 6.

I went through the posts in the forum and could not find an obvious way to solve that problem.

I am patient (now I know!), and I have reinstalled at least 10 times in the past months.

I would be grateful for some help to solve that tricky bug.

Has anyone experienced the same and found the solution?

Thanks a lot for ... solutions :-)

I think that you'd be better off contacting DW directly regarding this problem.

Use the help - contact support from within Opus.

When you re-installed, did you by any chance clear all references to Opus and Digit Workshop from the Registry?

That has been known to fix strange happenings.

If you are a registered licensed user, this is unusual.

As Mackavi said, do contact support at DW. And to emphasize... do this when Opus application is launched --- using the Help Menu dropdown to contact support. This gives DW the system configuration information that they can use to quickly solve this.

PS. please add a forum user 'signature' to your profile that will list system and application environment particulars.

cheers.

Thanks mackawi, connected and Lar_123.

I am a registered user.

I followed mackawi's advice, and got a short answer from DW: "This problem is connected with your virus checker or registry cleaner."
This is, maybe, on possible direction. No clue about it. Doubts...

I believe more that it has smth to do w/ the registry, since I am a long-term user of Opus, since Illuminatus. And many publications installated on my PC for testing purposes.

I am not an expert w/ the regitry, and I feel unsecure about cleaning it.

I might need aa advice from an expert among you.

I thank you all.

Hi Winfried ,

Firstly, as Lar requested, please post details of your system set-up. It's pretty pointless anybody trying to debug a problem on a machine they know nothing about.

Secondly, can you clarify the problem. You've stated that every time you start Opus it gives you this message but then you go on to explain that to work on your publication you have to re-install Opus.

This means that it's not every time because Opus would never work if this is the case and thus the install and activation seems to be working and this implies that at some point , something else cause the activation to be invalidated.

To clarify, how often do you use Opus before this message occurs. IE can you run it all week and no problems or can you use it just once and then next time it fails, etc, etc, etc.

Mack

Hi Mack ,
Firstly, as Lar requested, please post details of your system set-up. It's pretty pointless anybody trying to debug a problem on a machine they know nothing about.
I tried to do so. It generates a mail to support@DW without any attachement.

> how can I post my config ?
Secondly, can you clarify the problem. You've stated that every time you start Opus it gives you this message but then you go on to explain that to work on your publication you have to re-install Opus.
Correct. I was unclear. In fact, I had to re-install approx 10 times in the past 18 months. After I reinstall, Opus starts immediately. It can even start again the next morning. But after a few days, the pop-up "Cannot load..." will come again;
...something else cause the activation to be invalidated...
You're probably right.
...how often do you use Opus before this message occurs...
I generally use Opus one week every 2 or 3 months. On average.
It is precisely when I need Opus to start, every 2 or 3 months, that in all circumstances I experience the "Cannot load..." problem.

Thanks for your support.
Feel free to ask for more details/actions. I want to solve the problem.

Winfried

PS: what does Lar_123 mean by "add a forum user 'signature'"? Add to do it?

Hi Winfried,

At the top of the page is the profile link. Here you can add information about what version of Opus, Windows and computer hardware you have. It will then appear on every message.

In addition to all the information in your signature above, I think you'll need to post as much information about key programs that you use as possible including anti virus / back up / imaging / firewalls / cleaners /etc.

Something you're using or doing is either changing the registry key for activation or changing the system in such a way that the key is no longer valid.

Regards,

Mack

Thanks a lot Mack,

I updated my profile.

I include a system information report that may help.

Best regards,

Hi Winfried,

I have the same notebook (dv6000) as you, and Opus runs well on it.

I suggest you try a different antivirus ; AVG or Avast for example.
The text file you posted contains what looks like product ID's and product keys; I suggest you remove the file from your post.
You are running an AVG anti-rootkit and Avira AntiVir?
It's not generally a good idea to run antivirus products from two different producers at the same time -- that might be causing a problem.

Paul

Opus Pro V6.4 Built Oct.21, 2008 - Vista 32 Family Ed. Premium

-- Opus. There is a November 2008 build. I don't recall what it changed.
-- Vista. Have you kept up-to-date with Windows Updates? Also make sure your DirectX drivers are generally current.
-- Vista. I take it you have set-up multiple Users to use the PC. So I suggest you make sure that when you installed/install OpusPro you check the option to install for all users. Next you may want to set the properties of the program file (opus.exe or whatever) to 'Run As Administrator'.

I doubt the above will present a solution, but may be good to cover the bases.

You might find some way to 'Whitelist' OpusPro and the Plexus Plug-in in your anti-virus and spyware applications. Again... probably a long-shot that that makes a difference.

Lastly, Windows Vista provides some excellent system/event logging. Found under Computer Management and administrative tools. Just take note of date/time of the Opus launch error. If you can get a techy buddy to look over your shoulder or to help you browse thru the listings and details in the logs, he/she may be able to help pinpoint what is going on.

Another thought. Is there a chance that you have recently migrated your Opus publications ( work in progress Opus pubs ) from another PC, possibly WinXP?

If so try the old-favorite... resetting Opus registry on launch.
See: To initialise the Opus registry settings:
viewtopic.php?t=474&highlight=control+alt+launch

It's possible that a path to files or resources that was valid on some other PC is not valid for Vista's way of doing things. Doing the 'reset' will have the effect to not try to Open 'recent pubs', and you will have a blank workspace. Open some of the DW Sample pubs and play with those. Test Exiting and re-launching Opus. If Sample pubs have no problem, let us know and we can work to resolve your other pubs.

FWIW, on my computer I had some minor problems with Opus finding some resources. I resolved this by only installing Opus in the 'default location' (rather than ...Program Files\Opus ver 6_4 or some odd named folder).

Good luck. Post back what success you have.

Good morning Lar_123,
good morning to all forum users,

Thanks for the time you and Mack invest on helping me.
I learn a lot from you both and from the forum.
Vista. Windows Updates?
yes
DirectX drivers ...current.
They are.
-- Vista. I take it you have set-up multiple Users to use the PC. So I suggest you make sure that when you installed/install OpusPro you check the option to install for all users. Hem... Well! Since I installed sereral times, since I had several versions of Opus, and since I am not an expert of Windows, I probably have different versions or release dates installed whether I installed for "all users" or only for me.

Action: >> how can I clean that? Uninstall + registry fix?
'Whitelist' OpusPro and the Plexus Plug-in in your anti-virus and spyware applications.
I changed Antivir to Avast, as Paul suggested
Vista system/event logging.
Indeed Vista provides powerfil yet too complex tools for me. I'll try to understand the "Event manager" and search for errors linked to "Opus" or "DW".
resetting Opus registry on launch.
Another tip very useful, indeed! Unfortunately I can't see any on-screen prompt when I execute the recommended procedure.

Best regards,

Let's start with this...

Unfortunately I can't see any on-screen prompt when I execute the recommended procedure.

It's a bit of a matter of timing and coordination. :)

You have to single-click your Opus program launch (or double-click the Icon if those are your preferences/environment). Then immediately hold down the key combination for a few seconds. Two to four seconds usually works for me. You will get a dialog box pop-up asking to confirm.

I'll get back and review the rest of this later.

I have not yet read your last post specifics in detail, but for now look at these:

The "Cannot load version information" problem is almost always caused by registry "cleaner" or "protection" programs. Opus stores its installation information in the registry - anything that removes that information will prevent Opus working.
