Post subject: Font sizes differ on different target PCs
PostPosted: January 30th, 2005, 11:01 am
I have used Opus before but never seen this: I have tried a publication on several machines, all except one display correctly, but on the problem machine font sizes are increased so that some of the text disappears because it is coming outside the boundaries of its boxes. The attached examples show the problem and the desired effects. Changing display settings on rogue machine makes no difference.

Can anyone help with where to look to correct this. I had not thought text sizes could differ when viewed in different machines.

created on Opus Pro04 / winxp

The problem computer probably has it's video adapter DPI set to a higher number than standard, say 120.
The standard setting is 96 DPI -- many LCD screens are set up to a higher DPI of 120DPI so the fonts are readable at the high native resolutions the screens prefer.
My notebook screen runs at 120DPI, and most Opus samples I see posted on this forum have text partly hidden in text boxes, so I have to resize them.
This problem will get worse as many users are now setting DPI's higher.
I believe that Dell now ships notebooks set at 120DPI.

You can check the display properties of the PC by right-clicking on an empty area of the Windows desktop, selecting Display Properties, then Appearance. There is an option there to change the Font Size to Normal.

I've found it a good practice to always create a little extra space in my text boxes (especially for headings, etc.) to allow for this problem.

Glad to know that someone else has experienced this. It took a week for me to figure out that a client's laptop had been set to larger fonts, and that this had altered the fonts' appearance in the program. Even worse: it happened to her only when her laptop was plugged into her LAN -- so she would play the CD perfectly at my office, then run back to her office and it would run with bad text.

Is there any possibility that the next release of Opus to be able to auto-detect this kind of setting alteration on a user's PC?

opus does record the authors font dpi settings when the publication is published, so if you publish something and display it on a machine with a different font dpi setting it should display the way the original author designed it (i.e. 96 dpi on a 120 dpi machine)

it gets a little tricky if you wish to do this in the editor though, as you'd be limited to only having fonts in the size the original imp designers system.

It may be something we could include in a future version of opus

Alan, if I understand correctly the fact that I authored on a setup set at 96dpi should have resulted in a user on a setup at 120dpi seeing no difference in font sizes?

In this case, thanks to the posts in this thread, I did establish that the dpi was indeed the root of the issue. The user had his machine set to font size normal, but at 120dpi. WHen he set the dpi to 96 the issue was resolved. So it would seem that either I have misunderstood you or in this case Opus has not compensated for the dpi difference. Certainly I can reproduce the effect on my own machine, if I set it to 120 I get the identical screwed font sizes.

If you could advise me how to track down what I have doen wrong in this case I should be most grateful - I am fearful that fonts in the presentation when deliverd to the end client will not look as designed.

regards David

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

If I recall correctly, the functionality mentioned by Alan Dews was added in Service Release 2 for Opus Presenter 04 and Opus Pro 04. I would therefore first ensure that you are using the very latest build of Opus Pro 04.

To do this, simply launch Opus Pro 04 and click Help > About Opus Professional > System Information. If the Version number reads 04.00 or 04.10, please download and install the latest Service Release from:

ftp://ftp.digitalworkshop.com/pub/opusu ... 04_SR3.exe

Once installed, please republish your project and test on the clients machine. The font sizes should no longer be altered, even if the default fonts are set to 120dpi.

Kind regards,
