When I want to play a tune in a publication in 4.50 (Windows XP) when a page appears, I find that by ticking the page I want then, 'Actions' - ‘On Show’ – ‘Play Sound Menu’

Ticking ‘Continuously’ the song plays, but if I want the tune to only play 5 times and putting 5 in the box above, the tune will not play.

What, if any, other box/es should I be ticking so I can get the tune to only play 5 (or even 4) times?

I've just tried this and everything seems to work fine for me. Let's try to narrow down the problem: What other options on the Play Sound action have you set? What format of sound are you using? What is the duration of the sound (approximately)?

Many thanks for your reply - there don't seem to be many other options on the page - except 'Channel' is on 'Auto' I've ticked 'Preload the sound' and fade in and out of about 2 secs each.

The sound is wav format and the song lasts less than half a minute before being repeated.

Well, there seems to be an issue with the fade out option. I'm afraid the only thing I can suggest is to remove the fade out check and everything will work fine.
I will take a look at the code tomorrow when I am at work but since 04 is no longer being developed, unfortunately I cannot offer any code fixes for this problem.

Yes, that seems to be it.

When I untick 'Fade Out' the sound is heard. When the 'Fade Out' is ticked, there is no sound.

I do have Version 5 and I could upgarde this pub to it, but when I have tried this with a few other pubs I find a few problems such as 'pixalation. with some images which worked fine in version 4.5 - so I thought I would wait for a service release.

Also of course, experience shows there are usually problems with upgardes in the past - such as single text becomes double or Opus introduces transistions for page on and off when the page contains only an image - all of which involve an amount of work.

Anyway, on this pub I have unticked 'Fade Out' and it works fine.

Having looked at the code I can see the problem and also how you can easily work around the issue. If you specify the end time (check the box and enter the total time of the sound multiplied buy the number of repeats) you can set the fade out option as you originally intended.
