I would hazard a guess that the press escape (or exiting the publication in anyway) causes the box to lose focus, which in turn executes your script. But because the publication is already shutting down, the variable number or aardvark no longer exists and that's what causes the error.

Actually Mackavi - you have an interesting point! Thanks for that.

When one presses the escape button after previewing a publication, I guess there would have to be a reverse process occurring to undo whatever was done to make the publication preview.

Given this, I can now understand the error alert window on exit.

Cheers

Graham

This is a timely discussion. I just spent a few hours, eventually going into trial and error mode... on what I thought would be a simple practice to learn some String functions. On my simple testing... I tried so many different things thinking my scripting was wrong, but I must have "stumbled" onto Unchecking 'Enter >>> change of focus".

You need to unselect the Generate enter on change of focus from the text box :)

Is there a simple explanation why this is so? Or better, is this documented somewhere on when to use it and when to avoid it?

I thought the "Focus" meant which layer or which TextObject/GraphicalObject was selected or active. But apparently it is more to do with the window and or the keyboard... ?

P.S. I got my script to work by "unchecking" as above, and adding a 2nd trigger... so variable is updated on "each keystroke" and the other action (call a function) is done by right click. I don't intend to piggy-back here, and will post a question of my own if I don't clean up my script soon.
