Recently I had someone to e-mail me wanting to know if I could tell them how to find their password. They had forgotten it and couldn't get back into the program that I had created. I put/hid the password in the registry, but I don't want word to get out exactly where it's at, so I decided to create a small program that would work only once or twice. I could send this program to anyone contacting me with this request. It would go into the registry find their password and place it into a variable showing on the screen so they could write it down. I know what the label is, but the problem is that when you are searching the registry it only looks for labels within the Opus program you are in. I found that out by testing it last night.

What I would like to know is how to search the registry for the label that is in another program you have created? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Denn,

This caught my eye because I'm trying out some ideas for reading and writing registry data at the moment, but am slightly confused about what it is you're trying to do.

I get that your publication writes a password to a hidden registry key, but not sure about this search for that key. If you know where the key is, you should be able to read this value back in?

As I said confused?

Mack

Good afternoon Mack,
It is a little confusing to me also. I am creating one program to find the password in the registry of the users computer for a different program I wrote. After alot of testing I found out that if you use the command "Write data to registry", you can read this value using the "Read data from Registry" command, but only if you're within that program. In other words, you can't read the label for program 1 from program 2. You need the path in the registry to find that label. I've been reading the help file and it says...

Quote:
Parameters:

RegistryPath – This is the path where the registry file is stored. This parameter is required and must be surrounded by quote marks.
Note: Type regedit in the Run option in the Start programs at the bottom of the Windows desktop to list the registry keys on your system.
Key – Enter the name of the registry key. The Return Value will be the value of this key. This parameter is required and must be surrounded by quote marks.

Now I'm trying to make it work, but so far it has not.
Someone once told me "If it was easy, anyone could do it". That is so true.

OK here's what I tested.

My program writes a value to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\Software\\IMS

In a completely different publication, I read this value in. This works for me.

Are you saying that this is what you are trying to do, but it doesn't work, or are you doing something completely different?

I tested in 5.5XE
