hello
have opus pro xe running on windows XP..... err well used to!? when i click it up on screen, it arrives as usual, but all but a few of the choices ie file, open, new, edi,t etc are greyed out?

what would cause that?

have done the re-install sofware and the re-boot computer, but it has not changed it.

(all our other software still works fine)........... its as if it is one of those 'restricted versions where certain functions are greyed out, until you upgrade.
Our version is 2.7... it is suficient (when it worked!)

cheers

1. You say that you are using version 2.7 and that it has been working fine until now. I've used Opus since v2000b, and can't recall using 2.7. However, there have been significant changes in MS OS since the era when v2x was released. Which version of Win XP are you running: the original or SP2 -- this info might trigger memories from other Opus users.

2. Have you by any chance activated automatic updates for Windows and other software? It is not unknown for these updates to significantly change the way your system operates. Do you have the latest version of DirectX?

Following the process I describe below has usually resolved strange behavioural problems for me with Opus.

3. You say that you have done a reinstall of Opus. Did you do a complete "clean reinstall" where you delete all Opus folders and edit the registry before reinstalling? The suggested technique for doing this is in a post from Nov 2004 by DW Support, and I include it here for your convenience:

Please first uninstall all versions of Opus from your system. To do this, click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Look through the list of installed programs for any references to Illuminatus Opus, Illuminatus Opus Pro, Opus Pro XE, Opus Presenter, Opus Pro 04, Opus Pro XE 04 or Opus Presenter 04. If found, click on the entry to highlight it, then click the Remove button to uninstall the software.

Once all versions of Opus have been uninstalled, please right-click on your Start button and select Explore... Navigate to C:\Program Files and look for any folders referring to Illuminatus Opus, Illuminatus Opus Pro, Opus Pro XE, Opus Presenter, Opus Pro 04, Opus Pro XE 04 or Opus Presenter 04. If found, simply click on the folder to highlight it, then press Delete on the keyboard.

Once all Opus program folders have been deleted, click Start > Run, type regedit and click OK. Double-click on the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder to display its contents. Double-click on the Software folder to display its contents. Now single-click on the Digital Workshop folder to highlight it and press Delete on the keyboard. Click Yes to confirm the deletion. Now please close the Registry Editor using the X icon in the top-right of the screen.

thanks for info sentosa

was worried that the windows auto update type effect had advanced the computer and 'left' the opusproxe non usable.

followed the guide lines for removal (including folder and registry...... then re-installed. The software worked again.... few!

ive checked the version and it says v2.7 on the disk... appreciate it is old hat, but its a very useful tool.

cheers stephenn

There is a free upgrade to 2.81 for 2.7 users - which is available from the bottom of our Service Releases page.

You might also want to try out the evaluation version of Opus 6 - there are a huge number of improvements and new features over version 2, and you would be eligible for upgrade pricing.

Glad to have been of help. Sometimes it's amazing what a clean reinstall can do :)

I'll endorse what Duncan said about 2.8.1. It is a major improvement over the earlier releases of v2x. That's well worth downloading.

I'd also recommend your having a look at v6. I'm not someone who rushes in and upgrades just because there is an upgrade available.

There are features in v6 that I know I'll never use -- heck, I don't even understand what some of them mean  but that said, v6 really is a quantum leap over any other version I have used.

I work mainly on text-based pubs with some basic animations, sounds, and limited multimedia, and initially I thought that first v5 and now v6 would never offer me features I could use.

I can honestly say that v6 has been worth every penny of its upgrade cost. It includes features that I would now find difficult to live without.

Have a look at the v6 evaluation and check it out. I'll be surprised if you don't experience a huge WOW response :D
