OK, this one is back to basics...

I put a bookmark on a button, used it, exited. When I restarted, the pub started from the beginning.

I changed it to "on show" Same result.

I added "onshow, go to bookmark" to the first page and went to the bookmark page and exited, same result.

Help says "Just add a bookmark, nothing more to do."

There MUST be something.

Dave

PS - Why would "Set Bookmark" show the "QuickAnim" tab when highlighted in "Actions"?

Dave

I regularly use an automatic bookmarking technique which requires users to log on and then takes them to the last page viewed at the last session.

Is this what you want to achieve?

I haven't seen any kind work, but yes, what you describe appears to be the default and what I need.

Attached is an IMP file that might give you some ideas. I've excised this from my current project. Unfortunately, a couple of resources refused to let go.

The process is pretty straight-forward, and I've added some notes. Let me know if you need more explanations.

Thanks, Ray. Looks like a really good and useful routine.

OTOH, it seems to belie the DW instructions for bookmarking...

"As an alternative to using a Master page you could simply, put the Set Bookmark action on an On Show trigger on each individual page you want to bookmark – this will have the same effect."

That simply does not work. Anybody know WHY?

Dave

I have never been able to get the Opus Bookmarking to work. I don't know when it was introduced into Opus, but I started with v2.

To move forward I asked SteveH for ideas and he developed the basic structure back in about 2003/4. I've modified this to suit my changing needs.

Sheesh, Ray. Makes me feel pretty naive. When people I trust tell me something I tend to believe it.

So this has been not working for 4 versions...

Bookmarking is fundamental to training and education apps. Assuming the routine you provided works (and see above trust statement, I am confident it will) it shouldn't have remained unfixed this long.

Disappointing.

Ray:
I haven't figured it out yet.

It is not writing the page to the file.

There is no "GetPage" function listed in the script reference, so I do not know how that works.

I've attached what I've done for your reference.

Regards,
Dave

Hi Dave

This isn't going to make you feel good, but my copy of what I sent you is working perfectly :?

So, I've striped it back to bare essentials, checked it -- still working properly :) and have attached them again. This attachment includes the IMP file and a published version.

Have a look at the actions on the 3 purple frames (1 on the left and 2 on the right). These include scripts that might explain more.

You should also look at the buttons on the 3 yellow overlaid objects to the left. To make things easier, select the top yellow object on the left and drag it well out of the way. Select another of them and do the same. This better displays the 3 overlaid objects. Check the buttons on these objects -- scripts are included.

Most important! Make sure that you add each of the 6 variables as publication variables.

I'm not quite with you on this. My utility writes: user name; password; publication name; and the
pagename of each page visited (provided a page includes the frame that contains the autosave_bookmark object but it only saves the last page visited when a session ends,

BTW -- I haven't looked at your attachment. Will try and do that over the weekend.

If you find my description confusing (it confused me -- and I wrote it!) please don't hesitate to contact me: sentosa@jeelan.com.au

Hi Mallette,

The Opus fucntions plexus example that I release ages ago now, uses the GetPage() function to build a TOC from all the pages in a publication. I'm sure that it would provide useful in developing a bookmarking feature.

Find it at www.interaktiv.co.uk under iZones

Must just bring you up on this guys. Opus bookmarking works! It just doesn't work the way you are expecting it to. Bookmarks are not automatically saved between uses of the publication. They are simply a way for users to create their own breadcrumb trails through a (usually large) publication.

To save bookmarks you need to track the user and store them in an accessible location which can be maintained and is not read only. We obviously have lots of options for that - so you have full control. We provide the Headstart log in component and the Log in manager. We have the registry writing facilities but the easiest is probably to use the reporting features to simply write the username and bookmark to a disk location.

Hope this helps get things clearer.

Paul Harris
