I am creating a Polish version of an existing English language on-line Opus publication and need to use correctly a Polish font.

However when I copy and paste the text into the editor it loses some of the characteristics of the individual letters.

I understand Polish uses the Latin2 set (ISO 8859-2) whereas English uses Latin1 set (ISO 8859-1)!

Is Opus able to handle a Polish font and if so what is the correct way to copy and paste the text into the publication? Also what is the meaning of the "script" options in the Opus Text drop down menu. It does mention Baltic, Central European etc.

Any advice please?

HI. I did a quick test after chatting today... I think the answer is that you need to change Text / Script to Central European.

Then the accents etc are retained.

You only need to do this once per page (not per text block!)

However: DON'T go through notepad - this appears to strip out the accents.

I can see from your example that it can be done, however something is still going wrong for me.

If I open the original translation .doc file in Openoffice and copy and paste some text into Wordpad the text is correct. But if I paste the same text directly into your Opus example, even in the same text box as your text, it corrupts the letters in exactly the same way as before!!

What is that telling me?

Is it something to do with any settings in Open Office? I suspect not if I can paste them into Wordpad. Or is it a problem with my ariel font. Maybe I should purchase Ariel CE?

I'm sure its something simple now and not a serious problem. I just need to find out how to get it right.

After downloading Linda's example, I opened it in OPUS v6. I then went to the "Text" option in the top Main Menu where I selected "Script." I changed the option from "Western" to "Central European" as Linda mentioned. It took me a moment to find this, since I have never had a need for this before.

The text on Page 1 immediately changed into the correct format as compared to Linda's PDF file sample, so it appears to work on my computer like it has on Linda's.



I used the Text Copy feature in Acrobat to copy a part of Linda's PDF file. While still on her Page 1, I created a new Text Object and successfully pasted the text using "Paste."

I then created an additional Text Object and PASTED using "Paste Unformatted Text" which is a feature ONLY available in OPUS v6. Both tests were successful. The "Unformated" text has all the text in the same font size using the Arial font which is my standard, while the "Paste" text uses the Times Roman font along with some text in font size 12, while others are font size 8.

I would suggest doing a COPY & PASTE from your source document DIRECTLY into OPUS v6 rather than using an intermediary software text editor.

I have now been able to post the text into the publication by copying from the original .doc file viewed in Open Office and then pasting into Wordpad. Then checking that the text is definately set to "Central European" and copy and pasting into Opus. Then Its OK.

I still think the problem is with Open Office and not Opus, so I can at least press on by using this method.

If I play around with things more I may be able to find what I am doing that is preventing me from copy and pasting directly from Open Office to Opus.

Alternatively I could go and spend the money and buy Microsoft Word, but I'd spend my money on something else!

On the phone we also discussed whether to upgrade to v6 ... I forgot to mention that in v6 there's the option to paste unformatted text ... that is a function that I use a lot - saves going through Notepad.

There's also some quick anim settings that are quite useful.

I do quite a lot of work in preparing presentations for use in Poland. I use a Polish font by Ogonki and by switching to Central European experience no problems.

On a multi-language pub, I find switching to Central European for the Polish chapter changes all the accents in the French chapter!
