Post subject: A request to all seeking help

Please note that this post is my idea and my responsibility, but I and other experienced posters have discussed our concerns about what I raise here.
-------

The first step to take before you post.
May I suggest that before posting details of your problem, you use the Search link at the top of the screen? You never know you might find an immediate answer to your question :D
-------

Before I get into this post, please let me differentiate between 2 types of posts to these forums. The first type I'll call the How do I do this? request. These are not the subjects of this post, because if it's possible for Opus to do what you ask, you'll usually get a pretty quick answer from someone.

The posts of more concern to me are those that I call the Opus won't/can't do this or the Opus has a problem requests.

Almost everyone with a problem starts from the belief that the problem is caused by Opus. That might be the case, but we can only help you if you give us as much information as you can. Here's the real problem with an increasing number of this type of post: many posts provide insufficient information to allow us to help you.

Basically, inadequate information seems to fall into 2 problem groups:

Group 1
Sometimes there is an inadequate description of what you perceive to be the problem. Please take your time and try to logically tell us what you did, and then what did or didn't happen to produce the problem.

It helps us if you can be specific rather than using vague comments. The more details you supply, perhaps the sooner your problem might be resolved.

Group 2
Most problems relate to (i) a hardware issue; (ii) an OS issue; or (iii) an Opus installation, corruption, or registry issue.

Without more information about your system, the people who want to help you are flying blind.

Even with the info, they still may not be able to help you, but at least they have factors to analyse.

Here is an easy solution:
Consider clicking the Profile link at the top of the forum screen and entering information similar to what appears at the bottom of my post.

As an absolute minimum, please include: CPU details: make, model, speed; RAM; Graphics adapter; OS + any service patches; Opus version

From your point of view this might seem unnecessary, but from the perspective of those of us who try and help, this info can be critical, and it can save us time. I have spent so much time trying to find a solution, only to find that time has been wasted because I had to work on incorrect assumptions made because the poster neglected to provide me with insufficient details.
-------

A final comment
The people who try to help you give up their time willingly, but we all have other things that we also like to do. So, help yourself buy helping us. Several of us are considering not responding to posts that do not include the minimal info suggested in this post.

Ray --

I read the DW OPUS Forum several times a day. I completely agree with your posting (see above). Whenever I can help someone with an OPUS question, I will, but trying to guess what version of OPUS the user has makes this difficult. I also think it's asking WAY too much for people who are still using old versions of Illuminatus or early releases of OPUS, to expect us to give them a 'work around' to something which has been fixed in the latest release of OPUS (v6). Spend the money to get the greatest version of OPUS ever!

My 'pet peeve' is when someone expects other people to build sections of their project -- for free. Asking a question is one thing, but asking for free complex examples which are customized to their 'problem' is too much.

Ray, you continue to be an outstanding and knowledgeable resource for new (and old) users of OPUS. Thank you for your efforts and time!
