I do love ART!

Having switch my brain back on, I realised where I'd seen this error before and why it not showing up in ART is rather odd.

I use Paragon's HDM to create a base image of my window's partition and after a restore the only program to not work is Opus - with this error. As this is an exact replica of the partition with Opus working, this has always appeared rather odd.

I might be cluthcing at straws here, but if two partitions are identical and Opus doesn't work on one of them, then that suggest that something kooky is at work here.

However, it would be very helpful to get help from DW. I like Opus very much and have suggested to use it to some other developers. Unfortunately the support is not very satisfying.

I think it cannot be so difficult to tell me what to change within the registry so that I can use Opus on my Vista machine.

The current situation is very disappointing for me.

Hi Tarantoga,

I've been experimenting with installing Opus on various notebook computers with Vista installed. Alway get the occache.dll error message but Opus always runs ok afterwards, as far as I can tell.
In a situation like this I would expect the OS to have a corrupt or overwritten DLL somewhere -- registry values that Opus writes should get overwritten by a new install.
From your screenshots I can see you have a fairly fresh Vista setup, so it shouldn't be that.
Have you ever run a demo version of Opus on this computer?
Can you install Opus on a Vista computer of a different type?

cheers
Paul

Hi Paul,

yes, the demo version of Opus 6 was installed on this machine and worked without any problem.

Unfortunately I have no other Vista machine around to test that. It seems - as the error message says - that running Opus 6 fails because of it cannot find or read a version information. So it can possibly be that Opus would run on the machine if it would not be not stopped by this version information process.

In fact it would be easier to isolate this problem if DW would give me some informations about what happens (or what should happen) within this version information monitoring.

Tarantoga

It sounds like you might need to do a clean install. Go to
viewtopic.php?t=545&highlight=clean+install

Scroll down to Robin Garret's post (2nd from top) and then find Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

Follow the instructions as far as they are relevant to you -- to the point where Robin Talks about installing Opus.

Strange happenings with Opus can often be cured by using this procedure.

If you have created any custom galleries, I suggest that you copy them to a different and safe location before you run this procedure.

I'd also suggest that you search for "clean install" or "clean registry" or "clear registry" if you want more background.

Hi Sentosa,

thank you very much for your suggestions. I have done so and have deleted every single bit of registry entries that belong to Opus. Included all keys that belong to digital workshop, opus, illuminatus and so on. There were dozens of them in the registry though I had uninstalled Opus 6 and Opus 5 XE before.

Then I have used two different tools to clean the registry so that finally not a single problem could be found in the registry. Whether belonging Opus nor another application.

Then I have reinstalled Opus 6 and ... the same problem

The same annoying error message that the f.... version information could not be found.

I have never had such a bothersome experience with a software in the last 20 years.

I give it up now and can only warn everybody to rely on that Opus 6 could be used with Vista.

Hi Tarantoga

Sorry to hear that hasn't worked for you. Over the years many of us have used the "clean re-install" technique to rid us of strange and niggling issues.

I'm at a loss to know what to suggest now.

One thing it does reinforce though, is my decision to not install Vista on my 2 Vista-ready computers. It looks like XP Pro will remain my OS of choice.

Tarantoga,

I have checked with support and we do not seem to have received any support requests from you in relation to this. Please can you send your emails again to support@digitalworkshop.com.

We need to know as many system details as you can and whether it is a native Vista install or an upgrade. Also we need to know if you selected the All Users or This User Only option when installing Opus. Finally, please let us know if you have AVG virus checker installed.

Hi Paul,

thanks for your reply. Sorry, I thought it would be enough to post it in the forum.

I will send the complete data to support next weekend.
