I'm putting together a sort of rolling demo using Opus and am having difficulty judging how long is reasonable for the text on each page to be displayed.

Is there a typical average reading rate does anyone know?

I quick look on the web suggests that an average reading speed is 200-250 words / minute.

Have a look at

http://mindbluff.com/askread.htm

You will get a rough idea of your own reading speed.

Hi,

Thank you for your enquiry.

Many studies suggest that the average reading speed for previously-unseen documents is 250-350 words per minute. Each word will therefore take around a quarter of a second to be read, although you may wish to add a couple of seconds to the total display time to account for re-reading due to miscomprehension. Therefore:

Total display time = Number of words on page * 0.25 seconds + any additional seconds you wish to allow

This post contains exactly 100 words, so takes around 25 seconds to read.

Kind regards,

If there is any user input for this, I think it's always best to provide a way to "override" the default speed for rapid readers (i.e. a "Next Page" button) - I find demo's that only go at a snails pace extremely annoying!

(This is a personal opinion, not official DW stance etc...)
