Mac,

thx, will check it out.

I'm just now getting onto Vista, painfully, thanks to my WinXP system dying. Gotta find some loose change for a mthrbd repair.

Two points.
-- I kept Vista's auto updates turned off, until I got some drivers updated etc etc. When I went to MS Windows site and allowed/ran the updates... the somputer just kept booting and shutting down in an infinite loop. So bad that I could not even get into safe mode or get the RestoreDVD to reformat/restore the OS.
This is a current issue... Jan-Feb 2008, so do a ~google on vista loop or failed updates and such.
-- I came across this site, mainly for its "Vista Recovery Disc"... a repair tool for corrupted boot files and startup problems. It seems they have some other topics and hints there too.

Found a couple gems on that vista123.net site.

http://www.vista123.net/content/copy-pa ... dows-vista
A tip on copying filepath to clipboard.

http://www.vista123.net/content/microso ... 0-released
A utility for tracking DLL dependencies. Will this be useful? TBD.

Here's another site dedicated to vista... nicely laid out.

Some Vista SP1 early adopters reporting problems, Posted Mar 19th 2008 2:42PM by Nilay Patel How about you?

Alright folks, it's been a whole day with Vista SP1, and like any OS release, reaction is mixed -- although we're certain the people with problems are being more vocal than the rest. As you'd expect, major complaints seem to center around driver issues, that perpetual thorn in Vista's side -- sound cards seem to be the major problem, although there are also reports that NVIDIA drivers are being finicky. For what it's worth, Windows Update won't offer SP1 to anyone running what Microsoft calls "problematic drivers," until they're updated, but that includes several machines sold with Vista pre-installed, which is causing some confusion. In addition, older versions of security software like BitDefender AV and Zone Alarm are flat-out blocked from running on SP1, but updates are apparently available. Obviously that's a lot of chatter, so we figured we'd ask the experts -- how'd it go? Any speed-ups or slow-downs to report? All your drivers and apps still working? Let us know in comments!

Works for me.

I've just spent 2 days trying to get Ubuntu Linux working properly on a notebook. Installed ok but couldn't get wireless or printers working. I had to stop before the notebook went through the window.

After this, anything Microsoft does (including Vista) looks good.

Now we can all look forward to XP SP3, due out sometime soon ...

The Verdict On The New WinXP SP3

Since Vista SP1 was released this week and found wanting, the pending release of XP SP3 is getting more attention and importance than you'd expect for an officially obsolete OS. Well I still run XP in the office and at the house and it runs just fine for me, thank you very much. I'm looking forward to the new SP3 and the 10% performance gain we're going to get out of it. The verdict is the new SP3 is a must-have update for XP 'life-extenders'.

Now, let's look at Vista SP1. The main issue with it that it does not fix the performance problems. Yes, the file copy bug was fixed but that does not address the overall sluggishness. So what's in SP1 that might be somewhat valuable? Well, the kernel was updated to the same rev as W2K8, the BitLocker code supports more drives, a bunch of bug fixes and compatibility tweaks, and Windows Update has more drivers available. Oh, and some notebooks might see better battery life. So, the Vista SP1 that was released this week is a ho-hum hotfix consolidator, but that's about it. Make sure your apps support SP1 and test, test, test before you roll out. (Still true for XP SP3 too by the way).

I guess the main thing is -- if our clients want to use Vista, we have to be prepared to deliver products that work on Vista.
Or any other variation of Windows that Microsoft comes up with.
