Hi

I'm trying to simulataneously scale and move a line in such a way as to create the illusion that the line scales only in one direction. A collision enter trigger is placed so that when the scaling/moving line collides with an object (in this case a square shape), it stops.

I've tried various combinations of scaling/moving actions and scripts, plus simultaneous action groups, but my scaling and moving percents/pixels are off, with unsuccessful results.

I'll attach an .imp of the line and 2 objects (squares). The goal would be to drag the line to the edge of the left (red) square, click on it and have it smoothly extend in only one direction to the edge of the right (blue) square. The illusion is that it appears stationary on the left side and extends toward the right.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Here is a rough and ready way to achieve your illusion.

I cannot upload attachments, so here is a brief explanation.

1. Set the red and blue vectors on the page. Set the line where you want it.

2. Draw a frame to the left of the red vector and to the right of the blue vector.
Give both frames a solid background that matches the bg of the page.
Align these frame so that they abut the side of the red and blue vectors leaving no visible space between the objects.
Move both frames so that they remain above both vectors.

3. Actions on the line.
a. Collision Enter applies to the red vector.
b. When this trigger is activated, disable the line. This stops the line from moving. Add a short delay (1 sec works OK), Enable the line so that it is now active again.
c. Left Mouse Click
a. Scale Horizontal. I set the percentage to 400, and Repeat to Once. This causes the line to expand in both directions, but because the ends are hidden by the frames, it doesn't matter if they are tool long.

As I said, this is an easy way to set up the illusion. Hopefully you'll be able to achieve something that you want.

If you want the attachment that I can't post, just email me: sentosa at jeelan dot com dot au

Thanks, Ray.

While I don't think I can use a solution that is within a frame, because of the line cloning, saving of line display characteristics and reloading in my drawing program, this solution is quite creative! I suspect that it can be used elsewhere in a pub. Brilliant!! Thanks for sharing it.

I think what my pub line drawing needs is a math fomula that accounts for the difference between scaling in percent and, at the same time, subtracting movement in pixels or X position. This may not be possible.

Kind Regards,

I have used tricks like these to provide all sorts of illusions. Thank goodness the users can't see that much is faked, but it works to provide the sought end game

I understand this probably won't solve your problem but it shows a different way of approching the illusion...

Hi Mac

Thanks for this very creative example of what can be done with line drawing, using frames.

I have been experimenting using the collision triggers and came up with an interesting result: see newly revised .imp that is attached.

Drag the line to the edge of the blue square and left click the line.

Still a way to go, but progress.

Kind Regards,
