... thanks for your reply.

Yes, I run the most recent version of AVG 8.

Do you think that is the reason for the problems?

I have entered opus.exe in the list of AVG-exception files but this did not work.

I have also tried to run Opus Pro XE 5 and it worked without problems. The problems occured since I had installed 6.01.

If AVG don't like Opus 6.01 is there a way to make it work though?

T.

I engage my firewall lock during the installation and disable AVG - the speed is as normal.

Once installed - I reactivate everything and then I add the path of Opus rather than the executable plus I add imp files to the exclude list.

Mack,

thank you very much. This really works on my machine too :D

I wonder why such problems occur with Opus and not with other applications? :?

However, you have saved my day. Thank you very much :D

Mack,

Actually now you come to mention it
Whenever I use Opus - even on XP PRo - I noticed that if I snooze my CA Antivirus - the programme is a lot more responsive.

Many thanks for the tip

Pete

Hi everybody,

a few weeks ago I wrote that I could run Opus 6 on my machine after deactivating AVG.

This time I have the very same problem on another machine but the AVG-trick does not work.

Everytime I install Opus 6 (or 6.01) I end with a crashing Opus after trying to start.

In detail Opus does start but only minimized in the tray. When I restore the Opus window no page is displayed in the window.
(see attachment)

I have now tried for 2 hours to uninstall/install Opus. I have deactivated AVG. I have set the AVG-Settings to ignore the Opus path and *.imp files but without any succes.

I must admit that I am at my wits' end. How can it be that this one and only application causes so much trouble on my machines?

I even have manually searched and deletet every single entry in the registry.

DW: Please tell how I can make my copy of Opus work. This cannot be so difficult. The symptoms (start minimized, no page loaded) should give you a hint what happens.

I am not an impatient person but this stuff took me hours of my time so I am going to be a little annoyed.

T.

Hi Tarantoga,
I'm getting a similar problem. How did you fix it?
With some of the issues I've been having, I'm getting somewhat frustrated.

Paul

Neither of you appear to have contacted DW support which I would respectfully suggest is the best way forward if you're having such issue with the program. It is dangerous to assume that because your problem sounds like something you read about on the forum you are having the same problem and it is somewhat unfair to bin Opus because it can't be fixed via the forum. Often tenacious problems are specific to an individual machine that's why we try to encoruage customers to email support and use the Help menu option to include their system details. (Interestingly this will make five reports of this type and almost all are in Australia !?)

The vast majority of support enquiries we are getting at present are from systems with AVG installed. If customers change to machines without AVG or which have never seen AVG, the problems go away. We are looking into this to see if there's anything we can do to avoid the issue even though it is clearly not our problem.

The reason Opus often conflicts with virus checkers is that it allows you to create an executable with additional data embedded and virus checkers often read this "heuristically" as a virus for obvious reasons. Most security software manufacturers will contact software developers if there is a conflict between the software and their virus checker and we have not had any significant problems with any of the major players for many years now. AVG is different as we know.

In addition if you consider the additional functionality provided in Opus Pro v6 - the support for DLLs and the EndProcess utility which is potentially dangerous it is easy to see why Opus can cause problems. And unless you have another piece of software which does these things in the way Opus does them then of course it is possible that Opus is the only program which causes the problem.

Opus v6 also appears to cause on-access virus checking to activate regulalrly but possibly only with recent versions of the virus checkers so we are also looking into this.

Ultimately, if there is a problem with Opus, we can't fix it unless we can find it and we won't be able to find it unless people work it through our support process so we can identify it properly.

Hope that helps.

Paul Harris
