Opus: Opus Pro v9.75
OS: Windows 10.?
System: HP xw660 Server 32GB RAM, Toshiba Satellite Laptop
I have tried several times without success to get Opus working on an HP Compaq laptop running Vista 64-bit business edition. I uninstalled previous 6.01 version but this didn't make any difference. The program seems to install OK but just doesn't run. I sticking to my desktop running XP for the time being. As Microsoft is going cool on Vista I'll wait until Windows 7 is available and hopefully upgrade to a working Opus in the future. I'd welcome any advice on getting Opus working under Vista.

Paul

Windows 7 will be Vista with a few heavy parts removed and a few minor enhancements in front -- Microsoft has not had enough time to develop a new operating system.

I have noticed that most people with problems running Opus on Vista give few details.
"It doesn't work" tells nobody anything. Most of us using Vista can run Opus just fine.

A few possibilities:
Are you logged-on with admin privileges? Is Vista 64bit the problem (vs 32bit)? Have you tried finding the .exe file and setting its properties to run in compatibility mode? When you installed, was it an 'overinstall' or a fresh install? Did you have AV protections disabled?

I could probably 'guess' other things... but there's no real info to go on here as Paul noted.

I'd say that something else is amiss as except for the Plexus bit (ilm5.ocx) Opus 6.4 installs and runs find under Windows Vista x64

I've missed the replies to my question about installing Opus on my HP laptop with the 64-bit Business edition of Vista. Many, many thanks for all the suggestions I'll give it a go and let you know how I get on.

OK, to provide the missing information:

All installs have been fresh installs.

All installs have been done with Adminstrator privileges.

Installs have been done with Norton Antivirus both on and off.

The program seems to install OK.

When I run the program:

1. the logo and version details appear
2. the 'Tips of the day' box appears and dimisses normally, but the background of the program does not appear, just the box in the middle of the Vista screen
3. the program type selection box appears and I choose the Examples and select an example.
4. the program stops responding and I have to close it.

I've run the program in 32-bit mode and the various display combinations available.

I'm stuck and now I'm not holding my breath for Windows 7 either!

Many thanks for your help.

I have got the very same problem on my Vista machine. Why do you expect that Opus will run on Windows 7? Since I hear no help from DW belonging the Vista problems, I have no hope that this will be better with Windows 7.
And even if it would run on W7. What shall we do? Buy a new operating system to make Opus run?

T.

Hi T,

The 9600GT is know to have Vista issues under both 32 / 64 bit. Depending on what else you use the machine for try the 8600. I've got them in my works machine and it runs Opus under XP - W7 including 64bit without problems.

As for the won't work W7 if it doesn't work under Vista, then yes I'd agree as I don't think anything has changed in the way W7 handles graphics - IE through GPU.

To give DW credit, I think the fact that MS have an impeding $8.5billion suit for the misuse of Vista capable stickers on hardware - would somewhat suggest that the problem isn't entirely Opus based.
