Hi,

I'm trying to create a publication using SCORM.
But I don't know how to start after creating the publication using the SCORM template.

I read the manual, but I still don't understand it.

Is there an example publication that can help me to work this out?

Kind regards,

Oscar Nijst

Hi Oscar,

Do you have access to a Learning Management System or LMS for short?

SCORM is just a way of communicating between the learning content and the LMS. So when developing a SCORM conformant publication, you need to have a good understanding of the LMS that you will be using, in order to know what you are trying to communicate. If you don't have access to the specification of the LMS you will be targeting, it will be next to impossible to produce a useful publication.

Although the template publication is fairly basic, it is useful, in that it provides the core communication that is common to all LMS's and can easily be extended. To provide the additional communication with the LMS use the functions:

Code:
GetLMSValue("cmi.core.lesson_status", "LESSON_STATUS");

Code:
SetLMSValue("cmi.core.lesson_status", "LESSON_STATUS");

Where the string "cmi.core.lesson_status" is the name of the value in the LMS and "LESSON_STATUS" is the name of the Opus value.

Hope this helps,

Damion

Hi Damion,

Thank you for your answer.

I'm using a LMS where SCORM is possible.
I know SCORM is just a way of communitcating between the content and the LMS.

I create SCORM content using some other tools.
For those tools I create my own IMS manifests.
I know I have to create my own packages including the IMS Manifest for Opus too.

I don't know when I add a page with a test (for example multiple choice), where to place the variables for the results in the Opus scripts.

So if you or someone else can help with this....

Best regards,

Oscar Nijst

I see similar probs for me.

Unfortunately the description of the SCORM functions in the help file is very poor and no sample available. I'm used to create SCORM compliant content with Macromedia-Captivate and there this function is very easy to handle. You have to fill in a form with the needed SCORM data click export to scorm and ready. You find then a html-file to start the swf movie AND a manifest-file for the movie. This can easily put into almost every LMS and it works.

@ DW

Maybe you have a look at Captivate and can build a similar easy export function in XE. This would make the SCORM feature more useful.

I would also be very interested in more information on SCORM publications and some examples and or experiences of usage would be a real help.

One possibilty to try out your SCORM content without a real LMS ist the ADL-Testsuite.

http://www.adlnet.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=SCORDown&listing=Software

I have not tried it with XE output yet because I'm currently working on some other projects but I'm very interested in your test results if you try it.

I have been watching this topic with some interest. Alot of questions arise about the SCORM issue.
I have downloaded the ADL test suite and RT server and installed them both. I am not having any success with verifying OPUS is working properly.
I suppose the problem could be with the packaging. I am using the 3rd party tool found on the SCORM site called RELOAD. It's supposed to assist in packaging by creating the XML and other necessary files. No luck yet getting this to all work and verified using the ADL test suite.
Is there any better place or some kind of support on making OPUS work with SCORM other then the help files?
I have been an OPUS fan since ILM04, but I am getting nervous that OPUS might not be SCORM friendly??

Mr. Robin Garratt you seem to have alot of good answers on other posts, could you please help me out on this one?

Please don't ask me to read the SCORM document again until I know for sure if an opus publication is a SCO, asset or what? And what tools, if any, can be used to package the OPUS publication to work and pass the ADL test suite?

Thanks for the quick feedback Jim. I will check out this site.

Couple of questions though:

1) Have you had success in creating a scorm compliant OPUS publication? If so, was it easy enough to do once you figured it out? Was it created with OPUS 4.5?

2) Did you use the services provided by Rustici? And if so, did they help?

Thanks again for responding. There might still be hope for me yet.

Roger

... thanks for the link. With all these informations a pretty talented programmer can build SCORM compliant material out of simple text file.

You even need no authoring tool at all if you like to create your SCORM content manually this way.

But this is IMHO not what most users of authoring tools like opus like to do.

In my opinion an authoring tool should do this for the user and I wonder why there is no reply or help from digital workshop in view of this topic.

I have managed to get a SCORM system running locally under Windows XP. I have used EasyPHP as a PHP sysem (http://www.easyphp.org) and have gotten a SCORM LMS sysem, Docebolms (http://www.docebolms.org) to run under PHP. Now what I am tring to figure out is how to hook a SCORM app built in opus into this system. Can I use both a stand alone exe and a web plugin plexus app as wel? And do I use odbc or the web post data to connect to the MySQL database created?

... why don't we get any help or answer? Why? I cannot understand why one of the most read topics in this forum is completely disregarded by DW.

We are looking into this at present but it is not straightforward as we don't have the LMS infrastructure to provide a working example.

OPUS is going to suffer if it isn't SCORM compatible.
Teachers want to create material, not learn technical complexities or read long documents. Create in Opus and select a "SCORM" compatible output option and that should be it.

For testing, can't DW come to a suitable arrangement with a university, college, or school to hook into their LMS for testing?
