Hello,

currently I try to build a little flex publication in which some text fields are shown, which contain some variables.

Unfortunately I have got difficulties with special characters like ä, ü or ß which are essential for the german language.

When testing the publication in preview mode everything works fine. When uploading and testing it on a website the words which contain special characters are cut or some funny wingdings are shown instead.

You can see an example below. What I am doing wrong, or how can I solve this problem?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Tarantoga.

Not something that I have to use, but this method works. Insert the character by entering the ACSII code such as ALT 0228 for the given typeface - see example. I used Times New Roman but I'd guess it should work with other embedded fonts. Additionally, never used it but there is an option to embed other characters in the publishing options.

Tarantoga,

I tested your pub and see the same thing.
I tried different option settings at time of publishing (incl font embedding), with no change... still the same problem. Change font used did not make any difference. You should email DW support that this isn't working. Maybe they can tweak their implementation of the Flex SDK.

Result is same in IE8, Firefox3.0.4

Sorry T,

Missed the bit about it being dynamic. Lar's right, it doesn't seem to work and whether it's a glitch or not possible (yet), you're best emailing support.

Thanks for testing. I have sent an e-mail to DW-support and hope there will be a solution for this problem. If you or someone else has another idea how make this work I would be glad to hear it.

Since this problem probably affects other languages like French or Spanish and a lot more too it would be worthwhile to find a solution.

Thanks again

T.

Hello Tarantoga,

Try this.
Place the text below instead of your text.

Code:
This is a test text with some special characters: Der gr\xC3\xBCne gro\xC3\x9Fe Hase sprang \xC3\xBCber s\xC3\xA4mtliche B\xC3\xA4che.

\xQQ\xQQ is based on hexadecimal UTF.
This works fine for me.

I had actually been reading up on Unicode lately (actually looking at XML or RDF, and that got me reading some about U ). I ran across a few ( older ) articles and ActionScript code methods to handle similar problems to what you describe. It is not just an Opus issue. Just do a Search (Ask.com or ?) on: flex unicode problem --- and then refine from there. I got lost in what was client solvable and what was server/Perl problems.

(probably not going to solve it... but here's one link)
http://frankieloscavio.blogspot.com/200 ... -over.html

DW seems to have provided the proper checkbox options for handling special characters -- so maybe it is a simple tuning fix at DW?

Hi Oscar,

thanks for your suggestion. In the meantime I got a message from DW-support. They confirm the problem and told me that they work on a fix for it. :D

Nevertheless I will try out your solution which can be helpful as long as the fix is not ready.

T.

Problem solved:

... since the 7.01 release is out officially it's no longer a secret that DW did fix this issue. Thanks a lot for the good and prompt work :D
