I have Opus 7, desperately trying to finish a near complete project.

Today I tried to open Opus, but always it crashes after the UI is seen - but without my project (a 'Dots and dashes' project window is opened, whatever that is).

I have tried re-booting the PC. It is XP SR3. The error message (...Opus Pro must close) with the request to send details to MS, included the following -
AppVer: 7.0.1.0 ModName: asaudio.ax
ModVer: 1.3.1.99 Offset: 00010876

I desperately need to get this working again asap - so any help would be appreciated.

The project is a 'front-end' for installing 'free' programs, and for viewing 6 short videos (approximately 500MB each) - two such videos had been added to the project, the rest need to be added.

Thanks

have you tried resetting the registry.
To reset the Opus registry------Click the shortcut/icon for OPUS, then immediately hold down the ALT and CLT keys until you see a window which asks if you want to RESET the OPUS Registry.
This will reset all the options back to default

This has sorted problems for me in the past, due to Opus crashing.
If that doesn't work, you may need to re-install Opus.

Thanks - I couldn't remember how to do that - I remember having to do it once before way back.

I did it, and it came up with the error again, so I will try a re-install - presumably uninstalling first. However, it happened when I chose my project to open, so it rather sounds like there is a problem with that - maybe the videos are too big for it or something. I may try this CTRL ALT trick again and load in an earlier version, and maybe find a different way to show the videos...

In any event, I actually think I'm going to have my old laptiop upgraded with a larger hard drive and have Win7 put on it, to run Opus - I've had so much trouble with these latest Opus versions on my PC: I guess Opus 7 is Win7 'ready'... ?

OK, I again did the 'CTRL-ALT' trick, and this time loaded in an earlier version of the project - before the addition of the video clips (thank heaven for saving a different version at each important stage of project development!) - and no problem.

So, the problem is with the video clips, or the way I have added them (embedded I presume). Anyway, to avoid going through the same problem, I shall look for another way of playing back the videos via Opus.

I'm also now pretty determined to have my laptop upgraded with a bigger hard drive, and change the OS on it for Win7 and not XP. Then I shall transfer Opus 7 from the PC to that: I don't expect it to solve the video problem, but at least it won't have to fight with things like virus checkers and so on!

Mike,

Try googling for 'asaudio.ax' --- seems there are some 'hits' there.

Interesting: I thought it was a part of opus, but that all seems to suggest it is used in the conversion of the video files.

I may have another look at re-coding the video files to something more acceptable perhaps to Opus.

It's a direct-show audio filter used by Arcsoft for programs such as Media Converter. The problem is that some of these programs 'overwrite' the defaults normally used by Windows and cause problems with AV - though I've only ever seen this with the video aspect not the audio.

What format are your videos in?

Also if you use something like gspot, you can determine what codec is used to play that specific file.

Mack

Thanks Mack - that does explain quite a lot. I did convert the original video files as they (the originals) wouldn't play at all in Opus. I will have to go back and have another look at the codecs I have available here - and either choose something with more compression while still be suitable for playing in Opus, or find an alternative way for users to play out the videos: we have even discussed having a second disc (but doubles the expense of our exercise of course) which will play on a TV system rather than a PC. This has the advantage perhaps of being usable also by the Mac users.

I do have gspot - somewhere: I must resurrect it!

Thanks again
