Hi

Sorry if this has been covered, but I have a thick head and can't find the answer.

I have a full internet database solution working, but I have found that many customers (schools) struggle to allow Opus the interactivity it needs to connect through the web (ISP blocks etc). I have developed an alternative local Access database solution for these people, but am struggling with the location of the database.

Users need read/write access to the database to store scores and information.

I didn't want it in the Publication folder as the exe ends up in the highly protected Program Files folder after install.

I tried the ProgramData folder, but this does not have write permissions by default for low level users (in Win 2010 at least - although I'm sure it did in Vista).

I have tried the above as a default install, but then started looking at moving the database after installation is complete. I replaced the dsn file with one of the same name/location as the original and pointed it towards the new database location, but Opus won't find it. I didn't get as far as working out what to do with the Access password; this is requested when setting up the DSN but I don't want to give it to customers.

Not sure what else to try, other than insisting that they change the permissions on the ProgramData folder (or other). This seems a bit clumsy.

Any ideas welcome.
Many thanks
Dan

You have to set the ACL of your folder in the ProgramData for all users to have read / write else they'll only have read access and virtualisation will kick in.

Regards,

Mack

what about c:\Users\Public ?

Maybe it is also possible to put a Shortcut in the ProgramData path, and the redirect goes to where all users can have write permissions on the target file.

Thanks guys - sometimes you just need a shove in the right direction.

I wanted to avoid manually setting permissions in a hidden folder, but I can set the permissions in the setup packager I use (which is MSs recommended solution).

Should be fine.
Cheers
Dan

PS. I'm still surprised that I couldn't manually replace the dsn file for another pointing to a new location. The dsn file is copied to the program files folder on install and Opus finds it in its default location. I would have thought that all the database directing was taken care of by the dsn, but presumably Opus needs the DB location as well for some reason. I don't think I'll worry about this now :)

PPS. Also wondering why the ProgramData folder doesn't have write permissions by default. I thought this was the point of it.
