Yes, Opus Pro 9 includes publish to Android 4.x but please don't confuse this with native Android applications normally written in Java. This is a webview using HTML5 and JavaScript (not related).

This process is straightforward and works well and most things published to HTML5 will work on the current Webview. I think, somebody might confirm, that with the release of Kit Kat devices Webview will be Chromium powered and therefore better.

Thanks Mack for the info.
Are you saying that it only works with the Web?
So will my music program work in Android then or not?

When you publish to HTML5 you get several files - the HTML and the JavaScript. These would need to be placed on a web server for people to access online.

When you publish to Android, the files above get 'wrapped' into a single file (an APK) that can be installed on the Android device - this puts the files on the tablet or phone and a shortcut to the apps menu - therefore you don't need to be online once you have downloaded (or side-loaded) that file.

DW have made this a very simple process (compared to the older PhoneGap solution) and it an effective solution for people who need their application off-line - but it's not to be confused with a native Android application.

Personally, I prefer these web applications as in theory - any HTML5 application could then be wrapped to work on any device regardless of OS.

Hi Mack

I've already published HTML5 video material to my website:
http://www.mikelockey.com/musicipad.html
so I have some experience of this.

Earlier in this topic you will see that I have written a music program using
OPUS and OPUS script which carries a library of music and scrolls individual pieces
for the musicians - controlled by a digital touch pen on a 19" monitor.

I've just bought a second-hand DELL Streak which is now Android 2.2.3 (I upgraded)
to experiment with Android programming as these devices are now very cheap in the UK.
I can also buy direct from China and save even more!! 8)

I suspect that I will not be able to use the OPUS 9 programme on this device as I'll need a later
upgrade for the DELL - it's upgradeable to Jelly Bean for this model now but I'm not sure of the technique yet.

What do you think? Would I be better going down the Android programming route and
starting again? Took months to do the other.

Regards

I think the answer to that question is would you (your audience) benefit from some aspect of Android that your current system cannot provide?

If yes, then would Opus Pro 9.0 HTML5 provide the same level of usability that your system offers?

If both of these are yes, then you have to make a realistic estimation of the time, resources and costs involved in achieving the build.

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
The current system is unreliable because the digital pens - radio/usb
do not respond every time as required. I think a large tablet might
be better where the screen senses touch.

The easiest way would be all-in-one PCs as the software is already done
but the cost is too high and not worth the expense. £120 would give me
two Android tablets for example.

I'm just concerned whether OPUS will let me produce what I need.

Kind regards

Personally, I'm very impressed in what DW have managed to achieve with Opus Pro 9.0. I'm also very impressed with the ingenuity of the evolution members and how they're already pushing Opus to meet their own requirements.

Unfortunately, the answer to whether you can build your application in Opus Pro 9 is not straightforward. For example, I could give my uncle some basic tools and he'd build me a table - me I'd be lucky with my screwdriver and a flat pack from Ikea.

An awful lot will be built with Opus Pro 9 and it will be much easier than anything currently on the market - but Opus users have a history of dreaming up the most 'interesting' ideas (just ask my clients) and this will always mean that new and unique understandings of Opus will be necessary to achieve these results.

Thanks again for the reply.

I still don't know whether my OPUS program can be made to run "asis" on an Android system
or - if I buy 9 - whether the program will need altering. :?

I've been programming since the 70s, have the Plato award and a degree in electronics
so I'm not phased by this type of activity - although IKEA instructions sometimes baffle me.

Has anyone managed to do this successfully yet please? :(

Regards

Here's a demo page I'm working on. It seems my material didn't work on several of the
plethora of devices out there so I've now got two "sample" pages.

Try the first (Click on a title or number) and if it doesn't work click on the IPAD icon and select an item preceded by an asterisk. http://www.mikelockey.com/music.html

Hey Mike,
Nice site. It works fine of course on my laptop, vista and firefox.

I went to the "Pocket" page, and had a hard time figuring out how to get to the same or similar list of featured songs.
Guess I'm just an old-guy lost in a modern cave.

Hi Larry,
Not sure what you are trying to do. If it's not obvious I'd better change it.
Where did you get stuck?

From the pocket big band page click on the flashing arrow - bottom right
then click on the portrait in the circle to go to the music choice page.
Click on the IPAD text/icon for the same material with "awkward"
machines - seems to work with most systems now.

I'm slowly adding video material on the "IPAD" page. It takes about a day per video per tune.

Regards
Mike

I just found myself disoriented on the Pocket version of the site.

I started-off with the link you provided above, which showed two columns of song titles along with their play-times. I thought I would "find" that on the Pocket site.

I think I expected to be led to a corresponding content page on the Pocket version --- corresponding to exactly where I was on the full site.

So did you click on the arrow at the bottom of the "Pocket" page?
It should have taken you via a warning back to where you were.

Hi Larry

Remembering your excellent advice and scripting on my scrolling programme,
I've now found a cheap source of Windows 7 tablets which will, of course,
run my programmes - Android not needed!

I'm wondering if these will run my programme "sideways".
In other words rotating the machine so that the screen rotates 90 degrees.

I suppose the scrolling won't work because it's travelling in the wrong direction.

I haven't tried it. Do you have any comments?

Regards
Mike

First point, I assume you are heading to Win7 Tablets because you want to run Full OpusPro pub as an .EXE (installed or as Standalone)? If so, my guess at the 90deg rotation is that 'yes' if you can & do change the orientation by using the Control Panel.

More generally, if the tablet has a built-in Sensor for orientation -- then I guess it should work. For example, if the whole Desktop goes to Landscape mode, then programs/applications should, I think, run in that orientation.

In either case, I think you would need to (or want to) size your Chapters in Opus for the aspect ratio of Landscape.

Any others out here... can correct or add??

Thanks Larry

I forgot about the control panel.
This will be installed as an exe programme in the new computer.
I think I've got too many pages now to resize! :(

It's 12 1/2" screen which is bigger than all the IPADs etc I've seen.
I'm hoping it's not too small.

I abandoned the touch pens and returned to paper scores but the old monitors are 19".
I can only experiment I suppose.
Kind regards
Mike
