Hi everyone (anyone?)

Yet another very basic question that I ought to be able to work out but....

Can someone please tell me how to give triggers and actions to a button so that when a mouse cursor is moved over the button, it displays a hidden text object, when the mouse curose is moved away from the button, that text is hidden again AND when the button is clicked, it goes to wherever that action is pointing.

Right-click on your button, and select "edit Actions".

Then, within the Actions window look under the Triggers tab.

Double-click to select a trigger, say, Mouse over, then select the next tab, Actions, and select the action (say, Show) to go with that trigger.

Within the main button Action tab you can have any number of triggers, each with their own actions... for instance, the image here is a screenshot of the Previous Page button I've just inserted.... there's three triggers, Left Mouse Click, Mouse Over and Mouse Exit.

Linda's method is what I did for years, but I didn't want to always have to Show one object then Hide another.

MultiFrames -
Create a MultiFrame Object. By default, it has a Single Frame which is empty. From the Organizer (left window) highlight your new MultiFrame and right mouse click. You will see an option to Add another Frame (normally I add them at the end of the current Frames).

Now highlight the 2nd Frame in the Organizer, and in the right window, create a Text Object within this Frame -- add some text like "Click now to learn more!"

Go to Linda's code and delete the Simultaneous Show & Hide. Under the Mouse Over Trigger, go to Actions, and select MultiFrames. Then select the last option - "Go to a specific frame." You'll need to highlight the MultiFrame you created (in case there were several others), then in the lower right corner, change the Frame number to 2.

I would then copy this Action, and Paste it under the Mouse Exit Trigger. I would change the Frame number back to 1.

That's it. Preview will show you that when you put your mouse over the selected Object, MultiFrame #2 will appear. When your mouse exits, MultiFrame #1 (which is empty) appears.

Now image that you've got a whole bunch of Buttons for which you want with this same technique (with different text for each); just add more Frames to your MultiFrame. You can use Frame #1 to be "blank." Normally, I put Instructions in Frame #1 with a Display for 5 seconds property. The Instructions then appear every time you exit an Object, then it disappears.

I just tested your multiframe method, and it seems very robust. I guess my method dates back to the days when I was forced to double-do everything to allow for people who insisted on whizzing their mouse across the screen to see what happened!

Jeez, I am a dumbo indeed -- I usually just go to Effects and set the transparency to 100% for the "normal" state, 0% for the mouse over state.

I feel sooooo silly ....
