If I create a slideshow with a button action to manually go one slide forward each time, what do I do about the "time" setting for each slide? Do I just put it at the highest number possible, or is there a more scientific method?

Simple uncheck the Auto Start option on the slide show properties and then the Slide show will only move forward when you press the action button.
