Hi all,

Have been working with Opus Pro (V.2.81) for a number of years now and am fairly familiar with it. I have tested our outputed product on a number of different PCs to check compatibility and everything was fine ... that is until just the other day.

One of our salesmen was out in the field showcasing our auto-run CD based product when all that happened was that the background colour of the presentation appeared and the video (an swf file located on the first splash screen/page played). However NONE of the images, text etc... appeared at all.

I initially thought this to be an issue with the recipients PC, except the very next day the same thing happened with the same salesperson. After discarding that he had the "kiss of death", we realised that there was a commonality .. both PC's were Dell computers. Sure enough after testing on a 3rd Dell PC the same thing happened. This has never happened before - we tested multiple presentations and the same thing happened, all worked on regular PC's, none worked properly on the Dell computers. Also, some of the presentations didn't have video files on the first page, so we discarded the notion that it had something to do with the video files.

Any help would be much appreciated. :?

Thanks, Cleggy

Cleggy,

Most of our Development team use Dell PCs so I know Opus runs fine on
Dell Pcs in general. It sounds to me like it could be a driver problem,
have you tried updating the graphics card drivers on one of the machines
affected. If not please try this. You will probable find that the Dell
machines come with the default graphics card drivers which are usualy
years out of date.

Brenden,

Thanks for your post ... I'm glad to hear that this won't happen on all Dell PC's. Is there any way to prevent this happening on those "lower-end" Dell PC's though?

It's important that the presentation we distribute on a CD will play and be fully visable, however on all three Dell PC's, our various presentations didn't play. I'm not sure that when a client plays the CD and doesn't see anything that they will automatically think to go and update their graphics card driver ... any thoughts on a way around this?

Thanks, Justin

Justin,

Any program, Opus presentations included are only ever as stable as the
platform they run on. From a development point of view there is very
little we can do to insure Opus presentations will run 100 % on a badly
configured PC, this is were good instructions with your product come into
play you may want to include a guide with your publication with basic
instructions for resolving problems. You may also consider moving to a
later version of Opus for future presentations the version you have was
originally released in 2002 making it 5 years old. Five years is a long time
in PC software development.

Justin --

If you liked 2.81 you will LOVE OPUS 05. They have improved this product in every area; they added incredible features; and they've made it even more stable than any previous version.

I worked with all the versions from Illuminatus through 2.81 which was a fabulous version, but there's just no way I would ever want to have to go backward, now that I've been using OPUS 05. You'll love the fact the GUI interface is similar to 2.81, so, for basic "stuff" you'll be immediately productive with 05. You'll quickly find the "new features" including new Actions like being able to change the color of text in a Text Object. Check out the new features of OPUS 05.

If you've done projects in 2.81 that you want to upgrade to 05, there are just a couple of areas you'll need to address: 1) your Text Objects will all have to be checked/adjusted. Your old text will not fit exactly in the new Text Objects; 2) You'll have to re-do any hyperlinks. They didn't "translate" for me (the few that I had).

I promise, the new features like automatically animated text and many more Transitions (Page/Object Curls for example), will take your "old" presentation to a new, more valuable level. Your clients will LOVE your improvements.

Thanks for all the replies .. I have been meaning to upgrade to the new version of Opus Pro and just haven't got around to it as of yet, maybe this will make me do so!

Brenden, I totally understand that the presentations will not work on all platforms/PC's, that's just how it goes and I've always been really happy with both the Opus product and especially the support (by phone and on this forum), however it was very strange to me that this problem only occured on Dell PC's and what's more, since your last post, I did ensure that all the drivers were updated, unfortunately to no avail as exactly the same problem occured. Also, the Dell PC in question which had all the drivers updated, is brand new. So, while we've never experienced a problem with the presentations on any PC, we are now on the Dell PC's. Could it be anything other than the drivers do you think?

Thanks again for any thoughts and suggestions, and Demofred - I'll be upgrading immediately and looking out for those little issues!

Justin,

Were did you update the drivers from was it the Dell website or the card manufactures website? If it was Dell why not try the graphics card manufactures website.
If you go to the help drop down menu in Opus and select contact support it will generate a system spec. If you post that here it may shed some light on the problem.

I doubt the fact the machines are Dell has much bearing. Dell like all other computer manufactures use mainly standard parts, mother boards and graphics cards etc so
the fact the machine has a Dell badge on the front probably a red herring.

Brenden,

The drivers were updated via the "Device Manager" by ... not sure therefore if that means directly from Microsoft or from the manufacturer (in this case Intel).

Also, I am not running the Opus Program on the Dell computer(s), it is the CD ROM Opus presentation output which will not play on any of the Dell PCs (in case I wasn't clear about this earlier). The Opus program is on a seperate PC all together. Upon further investigation there seem to be problems with the Intel 82865G Graphics Controller (a display adaptor). I have version 6.14 which was created on Jan 23, 05. Intel's web site may have a further update but the link is not working. I have included the Dell PC's dxdiag below just incase you see something that is obvious why the presentations won't work or only work partially.

Hope you can shed some further light, thanks, Justin

Here it is ...

Justin,

It sounds like the graphics card you have may be an integrated graphics card. If so it looks like there are some updated drivers which are 6 months newer than the ones you have and are available from www.intel.com. As a rule integrated graphics cards are more at home with standard office type application and usually perform badly with games and multimedia.

Regards

Brenden Knifton.
