I'm trying to meet a customer's need for SWA audio files (yes, I know -- so let's just not open that discussion).

I'm using Opus Pro 5 XE. As expected, there appears to be no way to output in such a way that results in a simple shockwave audio file. Tried an approach of using Flex (also tried SwishMax) to create a SWF file containing only audio, followed by deconstructing it via Flash Toolset (to yank out the audio component) -- to no avail.

Any suggestions? I dread reinstalling Director 6 (the last version I bought and used) just to accomplish WAV to SWA conversions via an Xtra.

Check this link out. Perhaps this could help?

I swear PowerBullet had something that could do what you want, but not a 100% sure as I can't find it on their website.

You could also take a look at: http://www.swftools.org/wav2swf.html I haven't gotten it to work yet on a couple of tries, but in theory it should work.

Hope this helps

Do a search for Swiffrec. Not used it, but would appear to be a solution.
I believe it's also free.

Thank you both for your recommendations. The difficulty lies in that the programs create *.SWF files, not *.SWA files. So I must find out if what they are calling *.SWF is really a flash, or really a flash audio file -- as you probably know, it is sometimes possible to simply rename a file suffix and discover that the format is actually different from what you thought.

If the files created are actually *.SWF, I don't know if it is possible to use a deconstruction tool to yank out the audio (and even if that's possible, if the audio would be in *.SWA format or still in some modified form of its source *.WAV).

According to some other bulletin board posts, *.SWA is really *.MP3 layer 2. If so, does anyone know of other options for conversion?

If you can find a version of Macromedia SoundEdit 16 then you could do the conversion. Macromedia says that has been discontinued, so maybe you could find it cheaply on ebay?

Here is the link for the powerbullet convertor but it makes a swf audio file not a swa file. A swa audio file will play if you convert the extension to mp3 but an mp3 will not act like a swa audio file if you change it's extention.

Thanks! Do you know if a *.SWF audio file will act like a *.SWA file if you change its extension?

I understand that there used to be an Xtra for MMD which created *.SWA files, but I'd have to reinstall my ancient dysfunctional copy of version 6 and then try to locate this item (if it's still available) at the MM site. Alternatively, I could pony up a hefty sum for a new copy of their program (upgrades from 6, even if available, are not cheap). If a major new purchase turns out to be my sole remaining option, it would be a waste of cash -- I'd rather pay someone else to complete the conversions.

No a swf file wil not act like a swa file if you change it's extension. I know we were nt suppose to ask but why does the audio need to be a swa in the first place. Since mp3 is bascially the same, is there no way to use that instead?

Yep. Totally on the money

Just created a SWA file (Director 8.5)
Changed extension to mp3.
Plays in Windows Media Player.
Imported and published to Flex (XE 5.14).
Behaves as it should.

The renamed mp3 also opens for editing in Sound Forge and Goldwave.

Hope this helps

Regards

Client requirement.

Thus, *.SWA is indeed *.MP3 layer 2 and can be edited as such. But if a file is edited within Sound Forge and then re-saved as *.MP3 layer 2 can it still function as a *.SWA file?
