Hello

Can some kind person please give me some hints on screen sizes and publishing.

So far my web publications all have large borders left and right. I've been experimenting with various settings but I'm now confused.

What I wish to do is:

Create a web publication that will always fit the screen of any user, no matter what their resolution is set for.

However I do not want scroll bars (vertical or horizontal) to appear on their screens

I would like to create my presentation in 1024 x 768.

Firstly, when I create my new publication, which option should I choose (Scale publication, temporarily fit or keep original size)?

Then what settings should I apply in Page and chapter properties please?

Many thanks

Aidan

Hi Aidan,

Create your publication in 1024 x 768 as you typically want.

To have the pub resize automatically to fit any screen resolution go to the "Chapter Properties" and tick the "Resizing" option. Also tick the Horizontally, Vertically and Maintain aspect ratio options.

You can leave the four max and min parameters on the right all unticked. Or, if you want to set limitations you can custom set your preferences. The Opus HELP file elaborates on these features.

You must be creating new pubs using the Wizard Mode. In your case "Scale Publication". You can edit the Chapter Properties as mentioned above afterwards.

You would select 1024 x 768 since you wanted this as your default. Your pub viewed on any other size will either shrink-to-fit, or stretch-to-expand (Resize). :-)

Hope this helps.

Hi Steve - many thanks for your reply.

I wonder if you would mind helping me a little more please (you may want to bow out at this point!)

I did what you suggest. I am using the wizard and so used the scale to fit publication option. In the Chapter properties I made my page 1024 x 768 and ticked the Horizontally, Vertically and Maintain aspect ratio options.

My screen resolution is 1024/768.

This is probably a very naive question (and one which may be preventing me from totally understanding all of this) - why does the published web page have vertical scrollbars (to deep to fit the screen)? I want to avoid scroll bars so that each page fits onto every monitor. How do I avoid scrollbars please?

Many thanks for your time
Aidan

Hi Aidan,

Publishing to the web is a totally different issue. Hopefully someone may be able to help? Perhaps you need to make your screen size fit inside the browser?

Have a look at this. Web work is totally different than an interactive CD.

Hi Aidan

Unfortunately, what you're trying to do has no setting in Opus.
However this can be done with a little modification to the javascript
in the pubs html file

If you'll pass on the publication file name and your Opus version
I'll try to give you a hand with this.

Cheers
Chris

Hi Chris

Many thanks

I'm using Opus Pro XE 5

I have no publication as such - I'm planning! What I want to do is write somjeting in Opus (either at 800/600 or 1024/768) and then publish it in such a way that it autosizes to the user's screens but I cannot have vertical scrollbars. If I have to have borders left nad right on some user's screens then so be it but vertical scroll bars are a no no!! Many thanks agian for your offer of help.

Well, at least you know that it can be done,
but must be done after publish.

I was thinking about making an add-on util that adds several
options to the web publish like size to fit/keep aspect, custom
borders, remove scrollbars, ect.

Feedback anyone?

Cheers
Chris

There HAS to be an easier way than this!!!!

I've spent hours and hours trying to find screen sizes that will work on two screen resolutions.

My (naive) thinking is this.

Create a publication in 800/600 in Opus. Once published it should, thought I, work on user screeens configured for 800/600 or 1024/768

(you will notice that I'm very much a beginner here!)

When I publish and view the site when in 1024/768 there is an annoying border on left and right but the height is fine.

But when I change the screen res to 800/600 the screen is fine horizontally but a third of it is missing vertically and I have a scroll bar! Consequently I cannot write any data on the lower third of the screen but, if I do that, it looks stupid when viewed in 1024/768 resolution!

I'm climbing the walls here!

Aidan
