For those of you who have 512 MB of Ram, I have a question:

Does it seem to be enough for you? I have 512 Mb and am having crash after crash after crash. One thing that was suggested to me was resetting the settings to the default by pressing CTRL+ALT after double-clicking to open the program. I've done that 3 times, but I am still having crash after crash. Is anyone else having probs?
Thanks,
Mike

It seems to me that this problem is unlikely related to the amount of RAM. I ran 5.5 for a long time with 512. The I bought a new computer with 1GB. Following that I canabalised the old computer and now use 2.5GB.

The relevance to your question is that I ran 5.5 with 512 for months without experiencing the problems you describe.

I can't suggest what your problem might be, but can hopefully assure you that while we can never seem to have too much RAM, 512 should be OK.

Hi Sentosa, thanks for replying so quickly! I've discovered that it is one page in my publication that does it. It must be corrupt.

It would be interesting to know the technical explanation behind what happens when a page is corrupted, and why some pages get corrupted. If you happen to know that, I'm all ears. Not that I'd understand it if it is very technical, but I'd still love to hear it.

Thanks for all your help tonight!

Mike

Hi Mike

I think most of us have experienced corrupted pages :(

I can't tell you exactly what causes them, but I have a gut feeling that mine occur when I copy, perhaps incorrectly, pages from one application to another.

All I can offer as proof is that since I stopped copying pages, particularly by dragging them, the incidence of corrupted pages seems to have lessened. There may well be no technical reason for this, but there seems to have been a relation between copying and corruption.

Back (when v4 was released -- I think) I replaced copying pages (not objects) with copying pages to the gallery, and then pasting them from the gallery. Since then, I have not had a corrupted page.

This is all supposition on my part and may not be supported by technical logic, but who cares? It works for me.

Hi Ray, thanks for the explanation. Now I've got a strange problem with dragging and dropping from the gallery to pages with layers. In case you're interested, I'm about to start a new thread on it.
