I have just installed Ous Pro XE 5.5 on a 3-week old machine: Celeron 3.0 Mhz, 1GB ram, Direct X 9.0, intel GM900 with latest drivers, WIN XP Home SP2 with all of the latest updates.

I create a new page [does not matter whether new blank or existing publication], I insert a video, when I get the option to Browse for a file, OPus hangs up and goes into not responding mode.

I have updated my graphic drivers and Direct X; I have removed and reinstalled Opus.

I have attached my full system configuration. Any help much appreciated as I am at the start of a major new project and need to get down to work urgently. I've just lost more than an hour trying to get Opus do the simplest of operations.

regards
[very unhappy with Opus] Brian

Brian,
I know this is not specific information but can I suggest you uninstall 5.5 then install XE again but only take it to 5.14 version.
I have had loads of different problems with 5.5 but nothing consistent that might be of use to the DW people. I have suffered problems such as hang ups with the only way to recover being to reboot - needing to get on with several projects (and using different PC's) I went to XE5.14 and the projects are now out of the door with no further development problems.
Hope this helps in some way - nevertheless may I say that Opus as a product is truly brilliant with new surprises to be found around every corner - its power and user friendliness leave others back in the distance.
Regards
John

5.5 is the latest and most stable release. There are no changes affecting video between 5.14 and 5.5, so I cannot see how that can be having any effect.

What type of video files are you using? Do you have the necessary codec or playback software (QuickTime etc). If you are using QuickTime try using version 6 - the 7 series seems to have a number of issues when used via other programs.

I was trying to insert a .swf file. After another reinstall of XE 5.5 I got everything working. So I don't know what casued the problem and I will have to monitor it.

I've not had much luck getting QT 7 to play .swfs, and since I can use either a docview or a brower view to display my flash files, I've decided to leave QT alone for now.

Thanks for the suggestions. Happy to be up and running again.

Brian

I upgraded to Pro XE 5.5 from Opus 2.06 a little while ago and have noticed a few bugs that the earlier version did not have.

Three very annoying problems that are bothering me at the moment are: failure to save, failure to preview and when I set the shadow blur and hit "Apply" the value skips back to what it was previously.

The only way I can save when Opus throws a fit like this is to copy the autosave file (which seems to work) into another folder and reload from that. This can get very confusing after several reboots.

Do these problems sound familiar to anybody? The only thing that I can think of that may have caused it is running CCleaner while working on a project. (Opus wasn't open at the time.)

Mike

I have used Opus in all it's variant since version 2. I use it most days, sometimes for 6-8 hours per day. I also run CCleaner several times each week.

This probably isn't what you want to hear, but I have fortunately never come across the problems that you describe.

Often weird and wonderful happenings like this can be traced back to a corrupt registry entry for Opus, in which case it should be solved by an uninstall followed by clean install of Opus. There are several posts that describe in detail how to do this. Try searching for "uninstall" or "registry" or whatever else takes your fancy.

Another cause of some problems can relate to problems with drivers, but from your description, this seems unlikely, although I'm ready to be corrected on this.

Even less likely, but still possible can be hardware problems. What is your hardware + OS specs? It helps us to identify problems if you include these specs in your signature so they always appear in your posts.

I recall having intermittent and unusual problems some months back which were finally traced back to problems in the power supply unit. The lack of consistent power apparently caused issues with the stability of some hardware elements, which passed it on to the software. I didn't understand the whys, but swappping in another PSU solved that problem.

More recently I encountered another lot of instability. This was identified as a faulty memory address. Removing the faulty memory stick solved that issue. Reminds me that I need to revise my RAM to 2GB in my signature

I'm not saying that the problem doesn't lie with Opus, but I find it an improbably candidate. I cannot recall seeing this combination of reports posted before, and I'm pretty sure that if it was a problem related to Opus 5.5, someone would have encountered it by now.

Hope you resolve the problem soon.

Hi Mike,

I tend to agree with Ray...

Try uninstalling Opus Pro XE 5.5, and give it a clean install again, as it sounds like the registry may have become corrupt.

Thanks Ray and Steve.

It's an intermittent problem but I seem to be getting a cluster of it at the moment.

I'll try a reinstall soon and report on it's effectiveness.

Cheers
Mike
