I have a situation with vertical scrollbars attached to objects in Opus Pro 4. :(

A scanned image (.jpg) of a newspaper column is too long to show on one screen so I set its display option as "fixed" to enable the user to see the text full size. By adding a vertical scrollbar they can read down the rest of the image full size also. This works well and duplicated pages work well also. However, when I change the image in a duplicated page to a different newspaper cutting (another .jpg), the "thumb" in the scrollbar becomes full length and locks up! I notice that if I preview the publication starting in the duplicated page, it works. But if I use a backwards button to go back to the original page in preview mode, the original page's scrollbar then does not work.

Finally, after publication, neither page's objects will scroll! If I remove the thumbs in the scrollbars, thereby forcing the reader to use just the up/down arrows, everything is fine but that is not how it should be.

I believe I solve the problem when I remove the checks for "proportional thumb" on the scrollbar menu for both pages :D but this does not make sense to me :? .

NB. A search of this forum has found a similar problem described but without a satisfactory reply.

The situation does not exist in an earlier version of Opus (2001 21:15:28 ) but is repeated in Opus Presenter 04.

I guess my question is, am I missing something here  or is it just an anomaly on the programme :?:

I would really like to hear someone's thoughts on this please.

Sorry to hear you are having this problem. I had it too. Mine worked OK in Preview, but not when Published. Here's the workaround:

1) Create an Image Object and load your scanned graphic/newspaper clipping into it.

2) Create a Frame Object over/larger than the Image Object, then using the Organizer, do a right mouse click on the Image Object and drag it to the Frame. Select "Insert" when asked.

3) Now add a Scroll Bar (Horizontal or Vertical or both) to the FRAME Object.

This has always worked for me. Brenden suggested it. I give him full credit.

Hello Fred

Thanks for your very prompt reply - I am most grateful.

I have spent the past hour trying to make your (Brendon's) workaround work for me and it simply does not work for me at all. Putting a scrollbar on a frame object with an image object inserted in it has no effect at all! Your instructions are particularly clear and I followed them to the letter but no joy.

However, all is not lost (for me anyway). I persevered with un-checking the "Proportional thumb" feature of each of the scrollbars and that technique is working consistently on my work system anyway - I will check on my home system tonight.

If others are reading this, I need to add that the problem seems to occur only on the published version (sometimes in the preview version and then only on second and subsequent duplicated pages where the image has been changed - not the first or original page and there still seems to be some unknown factors at play which I have been unable to pin down owing to lack of time.

I would still be interested in hearing from others who may have any thoughts.

Thanks again Fred - at the very least you have encouraged me to focus more on the problem and I hope I have a workaround that works for me at least.

Kind regards
Phil

I am now at home and can confirm that turning off the "Proportional thumbs" feature (un-checking the tick) cures the problem MOST of the time! One time it didn't work. By that I mean six of the pages did work but one appeard frozen inspite of the fact all pages were duplicates but with different .jpgs inserted. So, as a last resort, I grabbed a corner handle of the frozen image object itself and dragged it larger by a tiny amount - the scrollbar thumb "woke up" and became active - sorry that's not a very technical description but is exactly what appeared to happen.

I can now continue with my project - :D

Any one else any experiences with this?

Phil

Hi Phil,

Fred's technique works. What you have to do is first size the Frame to your desired size, which will be smaller than the image. When the image is inserted into the frame, by default it will snap-fit the limit of frame.

To resolve what you want to do, you either hold down the CTRL key whilst resizing the image, or since you have the image properties attributes at "Fixed", select and highlight the image (using the organiser may be easier), then go to the Main Menu >> Arrange >> Fit To Contents.

The scrollbar on the Frame should now scroll the underlying image. :D

Ah! Thanks Steve - the missing link made all the difference.

I have to be honest though and say that unchecking the Proportional thumb option is a more elegant method even though it appears to me to be working in reverse to what the name suggests.
