I am having a couple of issues with Opus Pro 5.5

1) When starting Opus I get a number of issues, If I dbl click the imp file I get an error saying that the file can not be found but sometimes it will start the pub anyway. If I start Opus by it's icon I get 2 opus icons in the system tray but the program does not load. Sometimes it will load with a warning that their is an autosaved version and do I want to restore from that. If I select "no" then Opus does not load with just the icon in the system tray, if I select "cancel" then Opus loads. I had deleated the autusaved version but the issue persists.

2) Maybe related so I didn't start a new post. If I have Opus running, the CD-r' that I load in the CD drive show nothing and act like a blank disk. If I have the CD Explorer window open before opening Opus then I can read the files.

I was thinking of reinstalling Opus Pro, but wanted to check here first as I have customized my toolbars and would hate to have to redo, unless there is a way of saving the toolbar layout?

Thanks for any info anyone can share,

Peter

Hi Peter

It does sound like you may have a corrupted registry. An older Forum post provides instructions on resetting this without re-installing:

viewtopic.php?t=53&highlight=default+settings

However, I'm afraid this will reset everything back to default settings, which will lose your customized toolbars.

Perhaps, another Forum colleague or the DW team can suggest a way for you to restore the registry while saving the toolbars. But this may not be possible.

Kind Regards,

Yes, try to RESET your Register, and if the problem continues, do an Uninstall & Install. This is the most stable version of OPUS ever, and others are not having this problem, so it's something on your computer.

I had to RESET last year and DW said there's no way to save your Custom Toolbar settings. I did a screen grab before doing the RESET in order to re-create everything the way I like it. Sorry.

It's a long time since I had a Registry corruption with Opus -- I can't remember having one with v5.5. However, I recall many occasions where I had to reset the Registry with earlier versions.

Again, my memory is a little hazy on this, but I'm sure someone will be able to refute or confirm what follows.

DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU ARE CONFIDENT ABOUT EDITING THE REGISTRY. I've done this several times without a problem, but I accept no responsibility for any problems you might have :( I am using Windows XP Pro. There might be variations in other versions.

1. Start > Run > Regedit

2. MOST IMPORTANT Highlight My Computer, right-click and select Export. You now have a backup of the complete Registry should a disaster occur.

3. When the Registry Editor opens, navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Digital Workshop > Opus Professional XE (or whatever version you are using)

4. Scroll down until you find entries such as: Toolbars60.32-Bar0, etc. (In my Registry, there are 24 entries relating to Toolbars. Yours may differ.

Unfortunately, I have never been able to identify which of these toolbar entries refers to the Toolbars that I have modified and whose settings I want to save, so the next becomes a trifle repetitive. In fact, you might prefer to do as Fred suggests and take a screen shot and manually rebuild the toolbars.

5. I select each toolbar entry in turn, right-click on each and select Export. This will create a backup, usually in My Documents. These files have an extension of .reg, such as Toolbars60.32-Bar0.reg

6. Reset the Opus Registry entries to their defaults by holding down Ctrl+Alt as Opus reboots, or by making a clean reinstall of Opus.

7. Navigate to: My Documents and double-click on the *.reg files. This automatically replaces these entries in the Registry.

I repeat: DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU ARE CONFIDENT ABOUT EDITING THE REGISTRY.

Peter,

This suggestion is not Opus specific, and I am not sure it will help. May be worth a try though.

I've had odd problems with my CDROM drive at times, and also some strangeness in Windows XP losing track of file paths.

I think I traced the issue to multiple harddisk drives, and possibly some loss of state when "changing" things on my computer. Either installing/removing programs or running the computer with a disk removed or position changed.

I got back to normal operation by setting Winconfig settings to not start up unnecessary processes, making sure all anit-virus programs were off, and the doing a couple shutdowns and reboots. Did other "maintenance" steps too... disk cleaning, defraggind, clearing cache files. Specifically, the CDRom drive operated fine again when I disabled the secondary disk controller and let it reinstall (new hrdw found) after rebooting.

Again, probably a long-shot. Good luck.

Resetting the registry seems to have resolved the issues.

Thanks for all the help.

Sort of Off Topic, but I was wondering if their were any recomendations for a registry cleaner? Any good free ones...There are so many but hard to know which to trust.

Thanks,

Peter

Peter

I have used CCLEANER (stands for crap cleaner) for a couple of years on at least a weekly basis, but often more frequently. It is free. If you are interested, try a Google search.

If there have been any problems in that period, I am not aware of them. :)

CCleaner is updated regularly. Before it makes major changes to the Registry it offers you the option of backing up the Registry. I take this option every time, but (touch wood) have not yet needed to recover the Registry settings. :D

Some Registry cleaners have caused problems, so do some reading to evaluate and get different opinions. An Australian site which I find very useful is http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/ where you can search for almost any computer-related information.

HTH

I'll endorse Sentosa's suggestion - I use CCleaner regularly without any issues.
